MMU not doing what I think it should

MMU 2 on a 9-month-old MK3 that has been flawless. Have not been able to make the MMU function at all. But today I tried again.

I sliced the sheep sample as directed (chose the MMU2 profile, told Slic3rPE to combine into one object, and the preview of it shows the two colors involved). The printer starts up, selects filament 2 to start with and prints the sheep's feet.

When the time comes to load filament 1 at the first color change, a couple things happen:

1. It unloads the filament but not quite enough. It leaves about 10cm of the filament in the moving selector.
2. The selector moves to the left, makes quite a racket, and leaves filament #2 exposed. I am forced to pull it out with needle nose pliers and cut it flush.
3. Filament #1 tries to load and fails with the slow blink on the MMU. I can feel that I can manually push the filament forward at the spool, so I hold the middle button down to get it to try to load again. It loads a little, I can feel it pulling, but it stops and goes back to a slow blink.
4. I repeat #3 until eventually I can see filament #1 in the small window on the extruder feed area.

After all of this, the printer tells me there's a problem with the MMU, that I need to correct it and hit the button on the MMU. I have done this but now the printer is stuck at this point.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

#1 and #2 sound like the FINDA isn't quite adjusted right, like it's sensing that the filament is out a little too early.

Would you say it's screwed in too far or not far enough?

Just a guess, but not far enough in. The ball should drop away from the finda when the filament gets far enough in. If the finda is triggering with the filament not yet unloaded, that means the ball is far enough away from the detecter even with the filament in there to sometimes detect "ball not next to detector". Mark where it is now with a pen, then redo the original installation instructions and see if you end up at the same place, and consider putting a bit lower.
