Looking for Recommendations on Good Wipe Objects
Dear All,
I routinely use the MMU2S to print things in color, but at the same time as with everybody I am looking to minimize the plastic lost towards the wipe tower. I am wondering if people have nice objects suited to being "wipe objects" that they use or can recommend to me:
A good wipe object should have...
- Either a good height, or generally be scalable in Z
- Not too much in X or Y dimension
- Be "generally useful" and having multiple of this item may be beneficial
So far my best candidates are things like pen holders. But would be interested to see what you come up with

I know it doesn't give you something useful but it will speed up printing and reduce waste considerably.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've seen reviews of this and concluded that it is not reliable enough in its current form.
So far my best candidate is a Aluminium Extrusion Profile bar: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:280318
I mean, I don't have a need for it, but perhaps a assembly block is marginally more useful than a literal block.
Another alternative and overview
Yesterday evening I came across a post which mentioned the setting "No sparse layers (EXPERIMENTAL)" in Print Settings - Multiple extruders. I haven't tried it yet but, like the BigBrain3D contraption, it only adds a layer on the wipe tower when there is a colour change.
But this means the extruder needs to move down to the lower wipe tower level and back up, which will takes more time than a normal wipe tower. Also, no objects can be printed left and right of the wipe tower so it takes up even more real estate.
Overview:
- Normal wipe tower, which takes up a lot of time, space and filament
- Experimental no sparse layers, which takes up even more space and more time, but less filament
- Wipe into infill, which will need a smaller wipe tower and will sometimes bleed through when perimeters are of a lighter colour
- Wipe into object, equal to wipe tower, but will (hopefully) result in a useful object
- BigBrain3D method, takes up a little space, purges only when needed, but looks a bit flimsy (components have arrived, will test shortly)
Will need to test if the experimental no spare layers can be combined with wipe into a smaller object...

Yes, I am aware of all the options, and the ones compatible are already engaged.
I wipe into the object infill, wipe into the rectilinear supports, wipe into the tree supports. Sparse layers don't make much sense more me because I need to change color almost every layer anyway.
That's why I'm looking for good wipe objects that are useful and scalable.
If you are just printing different colours of the same filament then almost anything that is going to be painted, or used as an internal working part, or used in a situation where no-one cares about the colour will be suitable. Early design prototypes which you know will be refined and reprinted are obvious candidates.
If you are mixing filaments then any object will be fragile at best.
