IR Filament Sensor Position MMU2S v MK3S

I have just upgraded my MK3S MMU2S to MK3S +MMU2S and the process got me thinking about why do Prusa maintain 2 filament sensor types? The MMU2S version measures that the filament is in the gears which is a more direct measurement, but the calibration process is very sensitive. The MK3S version measures the filament before it reaches the gears, but appears to be a more stable configuration.

Does anyone know why Prusa has the 2 methods?

For the MMU2S filament runout is detected by the FINDA in the MMU. The IR sensor is used for automated bowden length detection and as a (un)loading indicator. (Hence its position at the gears.)

On an MK3S the IR sensor is used for runout detection. It has to sit before the gears so that the printer is able to unload the filament rest.
