Do I need to use Support in PrusaSlicer to print Spare parts ?

Hi,

On Prusa website, they tell you PETG, 0.2 height, 20% grid infill. But nothing about using support or not. Should I use them and where ?

When I sliced the STL files, there seems to be air printed plastic on the big parts so support could be needed. I also wonder for some holes as they could be less accurate without. But after adding everywhere support, some supports seem to be in "you'll never be able to remove it" zone.

Those are complexe mechanical parts and I wouldn't want my MMU2S not working correctly because I printed the parts wrong. I wonder why Prusa don't give all the settings in 3MF files or gcode for the original parts. Or at least say that support is not needed. I couldn't find this information anywhere I look.

I ask because I would like to print a complete MMU2S set for 2 reasons : have it in a cool WAF color so my wife accepts me buying another one (I already made the enclosure V2 in its favorite color) and in case of break part in the future. I'll do the same for my printer parts.

Be careful about the color, if I remember there is at least 1 part which needs to be printed in black. I am facing the same issue as you but decided to print it without the support (may reconsider using BVOH if the parts will be wrong).

@pporozin

Yes, Prusa state that all the extruder parts must be in black, at least all parts surrounding the IR sensor. But I was talking here about the MMU2S unit and its filament sensor uses a PINDA probe so there should be no problem with any color : the metal ball does the job.

MMU2S seems hard by itself so I prefer to ask before taking the risk to print not working parts, as it'll be difficult to tell if it is an assembly error or printed part. Also, all the MMU2S unit takes more than a day to print, I wouldn't want to waste all this plastic 😉

I haven't printed MMU2S parts, but all of the MK3/S printer parts are designed to print without support, and my MMU2S kit parts show no signs of having been printed with support, and the MMU2S models look printable without support — some of the more precarious areas are non-critical dimensions.

Many thanks for your answer. Seems logical as they print them all day long but for now the only Prusa made files I printed where their enclosure V2, full of supports: but they don't print those all day long.

I'll try without support then. Thanks for your help.

Thanks to your help, here is the result of printing all the parts in... Prusament PETG Carmine Red.

I have not finished building yet. Also still the original black plastic part with metal insert but I'll try to remove and insert it in the printed Red one.

MMU2S in red
