Preparing to build MMU2, any tips and tricks?

Hi there,

I'm probably an odd 3D-printer dude that ordered my printer pre-built and a MMU2 kit to be able to print multi color/material etc.

It looks like my MMU2 will arrive before my printer so my thoughts are to assemble that unit as much as possible to be ready to just plug in to the printer.

Anything I should know, any tips how to get the best assembled MMU2 possible?
Are there any tarpits that I should know about etc?

I have some knowledge about 3D-printing and I own a FlashForge Finder printer with all manual calibration etc but I have never owned or used a Prusa printer before.

I would suggest to get experience with your new MK3 first. After you feel comfortable and don't have any issues, you can put MMU2 on top. I'm pretty sure you don't want to fight MK3 and MMU2 at the same time. MMU2 alone is complex enough.

I would strongly recommend getting the printer to work before tackling the MMU2.

The MMU adds a significant number of new variables to getting a successful print. You really want to start from a baseline of knowing that the printer is working well before throwing extra complexity in the mix.

Once you get to working on the MMU, the main thing is to take your time and recheck everything as you go. The MMU really likes having all the parts precisely aligned. A slight mistake during assembly can create all kinds of gremlins when you try to print, and can be very hard to troubleshoot.

when you assemble the mmu make sure whenever you put PTFE tube in the plastic around it does not deform the tubes.

the knife is a pain.

it's all about no resistance on filament (loading and unloading)

agree with the use the mk3 abit first.

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

Hi there,

As I have ordered a pre-built Prusa I thought it should pretty much work out of the box, isn't this true?
If not I will make some prints from my "old" torture test that I made for my FlashForge, my FlashForge Finder printed better than my friends Prusa i3 MK2 so you might have a point that I need to check the printer before.

But anyway, I can start to build the MMU2 even if I don't connect it right?

Prebuilt doesn't mean hazzle free 😉 .
Every printer is different. Get used to the sound, print quality. Make sure all your filaments perform good without any jams and other famous issues. Otherwise you will always ask yourself if MMU2+MK3 perform different then MK3 only.

Regarding the MMU2 assembly, it's more or less one way thing. Once you put everything together it's hard to disassemble it without breaking something. There are some things I would have done different and paid more attention to it during assembly. It would have saved me couple hours of make it right.
Don't hurry on build it. You can only benefit if you wait. The firmware is still being updated and the manual is/will also be updated. In addition you can learn from the early users.

That's true, my FlashForge Finder was pre-built and modded to use PETG with no heated print bed etc and that was not trouble free at all. On my first unit there was a weird glitch in the mother board that knocked my calibrations sensor so bad it calibrated the bed with the right side 2mm higher than the rest 😉 Back then I was really new at 3D printing so it took me a lot of cursing the unit before I calibrated with a paper and noticed the gap 😉

I will start with the original printer with no mods some time and see if my printer and I can be BFF.

think it helps if you say "chow" to it often

Re: Preparing to build MMU2, any tips and tricks?

I would seriously consider getting some 2.5 x 4 PTFe tubing to replace both the orange bowden tube, and the five filament feed tubes,
this reduces some of the friction in the system,

and make sure all of the filament paths are clear of filament waste...

I also found the filament reel rollers quite stiff, so I created a roller set that runs loosely on the 8mm shafts, creating a larger radius roller and consequent reduced friction.

I put the sleeve on the top of the bobbin, towards the bearings, to prevent the bobbin body, rubbing on the vacuum formed tray

there is enough freedom of movement to allow the bobbing to adjust for any of the filament spools that I have in my collection... I printed mine in PLA, but the material doesn't matter... I used 0.2mm layer height and 20% infill, standard temperatures, the only setting I changed was retraction which I reduced to 0.6mm

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

I threatened my Google Home so much yesterday that it stopped responding for 2 hours 😁
So maybe I should be nicer to my printer...

Evem my daughter thought I was to rude against Google 🤣

I was having under-extrusion issues and narrowed it down to tension in the feed path caused by the terrible, absolutely horrible, stock spool holders. I printed out a set of these and it made all the difference in the world! Much quicker and easier than the other option using PVC pipe. Just brilliant!

Thanks Joan. As always you come through!
