so as a follow up to this it appears that the problem was the heatbreak. after working with Prusa support, the MMU1 / MK3 heatbreak is required for this setup to work. my tip diameters are in between 1.82 and 1.9 and i have more successful prints than ever.

Swapping back in the original mk3 heatbreak seems to resolve my issue. I remember replacing it with a spare e3d v6 heatbreak a while back when I was having some issues with the printer.
