Doesn't load filament beyond MMU

I removed the orange PTFE tube between the MMU and the Extruder so I can see what's going on.

With only a single filament in the MMU and the selector in the leftmost position I press the middle button. The MMU grabs hold of the filament and pulls it in a couple centimeters. The MMU advances the filament until the FINDA detects that it's in the selector. I see an LED deep in the FINDA blink, and then it backs out.

I've also tried the Load Filament 1 menu item and the same thing happens.

What do I do to get it to load all the way, that is, to load enough filament to go beyond the FINDA and get to the extruder?

Load filament will simply load into the correct position in the MMU; feeds until FINDA triggers and retracts into idler body.

When printing, a tool change command (Tn) will load the required filament into the extruder.
