Pretty sure your esteps file was corrupt and you didn't actually set e-steps. Try the attached. I have created it as a plain text code file

You need to unzip to get the gcode file. forum won't allow upload of plain gcode file

I downloaded it again, then looked at the Q&A talking about the code and it says it will give the error, so it is a known good error to receive.  What I forgot to do was to power cycle the machine after running it.  When in doubt, RTFM...

Using Windows as the OS, you may proceed this way:

Step 1

Open the Notepad app (or any other text file editor).

NOTE: You can find this app by pressing the windows key and writing the word notepad with your keyboard. Click the app’s icon to open it and start a new document.

Step 2

Copy and Paste in the new document the following 2 lines:

M92 E830

M500

Step 3

Save the Document as EstepMK3.gcode into the SD-card you use in your printer.

NOTE: it is important to name the file using the extension .gcode

Step 4

Insert the SD card in the printer, and use its interface to “print” the file you’ve just saved.

NOTE: The printer will say that it is incomplete, just ignore this message and select to print it anyway.

Conclusion

  1. After it has completed (just takes a short moment) power off the printer.
  2. Power on your printer and the new e-step value should be set.

1. Your extruder IS over-extruding.

2. There is only one reason in our setup for this to happen. The e-steps is not correctly set.

Therefore, set e-steps again. Preferably in a manner that is different from how it was prior attempted.

I do not know why e-steps were not accepted. This has nothing to do with 0.9 motors, just e-steps for the BMG gearing.

Tip: some custom start gcode in the slicer will override the esteps. Search for M92 in the file you're trying to print.

Had me scratching my head for a few minutes with the opposite problem:

That was a great idea, but the code was not in there.  HOWEVER, I went ahead and added it (both the steps and the 500 to save it) and am printing now.  Initial signs are good!

I am completely positive you are right, and NO idea why my board will not accept the changes and keep them.  I went ahead and added it to the start code in PrusaSlic3r and it appears to be taking it.  I have no problem keeping it there if it makes everything work.  🙂  I will find out in 10 minutes how my cube looks.

OK, it finished the print.  It looks really bad close up like this, but not so bad from a distance...but I know I have more tweaking to do.  Any pointers on the direction to take?

The cube was printed using PrusaSlic3r with the 830 esteps added to the custom start code.  Printed using esun PLA+ at 0.3mm layer height, the rest stock settings.  Firmware updated for the BMG extruder and Moon 0.9 X and Y axis.

You cannot upload files containing many easily abused gcodes like M500. Doesn't mean you can't still do malicious things, but the more nefarious ones are blocked.

Tons of variance on both x and y axes in your pict. Check belts are proper tension and pulley are secure. Something looks loose from here.

Maybe not belts being loose because I don't see ringing.

Could also be a loose hot end mount.

Thanks, I will tear down the hot end, clean it, and make sure it is assembled properly.  Could be the last time I took it apart (replaced bearings) I lost a square nut and it is not tight anymore.

Did you ever test the Moons' MS17HD5P4100 1.8 for the extruder motor?  I've been using the one I bought when I originally purchased my BMG.  I only swapped back to using the StepperOnline (actually using the one BondTech packed in with the BMG MK3 upgrade kit) one you recommended for the BNBSX because you seemed to really like the motor.  Were there any issues if you did try out that 1.8 Moons on the extruder, geared of course?  I already own it, and was considering throwing it back on the machine, but wanted to know if you had any issues with, or reason discourage that swap.  It's just collecting dust at this point.

I used it for a while. It worked, and surface finish was good, but it ultimately wasn't my favorite. Layers were a bit inconsistent. It was most noticeable when printing things with thin or single-wall perimeters. Hold them up to the light, and they are less crisp and equal.

That said: if you have it, by all means try it! I'd love to hear a second opinion!

I have not test that motor. Most of my short body tests were on 0.9 degree units. They simply didn't have enough torque to cleanly restart after retractions. Just as Evan pointed out, extrusion uniformity is easy to see in single layer perimeters and e-core towers. Just shine a light inside the object and view how it comes through the walls.

Just what I need. Another addition to my two dozen plus stepper collection. It's been an expensive investigation getting the original Prusa to print with as good quality as their reputation suggests.

Rebuilt the hot end (disassembled and cleaned it, assembled it again).  Did the first layer calibration and added the 830 estep code into PrusaSlicer and this is my newest print.  0.2mm quality setting with 15% infill and everything sitting at default.  Running Moon 0.9 on X and Y and Bondtech extruder upgrade on E.

What might I be doing wrong?  I am using the smooth PEI sheet because I cannot seem to get anything to stick well on the textured sheet...I may have damaged it following their instructions to use acetone before the said it would damage it if you used it.

Totally bizarre.

Could you print a vase mode (1 perimeter) 30 x 30 x 30 cube and mic the wall thickness?

That would give us a measure of how your extrusion is behaving.

I looks less definitely less wobbly, but still over-extruded.

If I want to run the Prusa ECOR_Tower G-Code ( https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa3D-Test-Objects/tree/master/MK3/ECOR_TOWER ), do I need to enable something in your config for the firmware? This one you mentioned before, or is this for something more?

AnatomicFlack, you should not need to do any special, but I have not used the Prusa-ecore in quite a while. Perhaps their current firmware is no longer compatible.

I'm going to have you follow some instructions exactly to execute gcodes. Please refrain from opening the gcodes to check them with your editor. I want to fully remove the editor as a remote, but possible cause of problems.

Please follow the instructions exactly and without interpretive deviation. Your system is acting in a bizarre manner and we need to greatly reduce the number unknown variables.

=============== Begin instructions

Unzip the attached zip archive to get a folder with the following three files. You may also see some files starting with a dot, but ignore those. Just pay attention to the following three files...


extrusion calibration PETG.gcode

extrusion calibration PLA.gcode

set BMG esteps.gcode


Copy the three files to your SD card. Do not open them. Do not edit them. Just copy them to your SD card.

Put SD card into printer.

Print from SD card the file "BMG esteps.gcode"

Wait ten seconds

Turn printer OFF

Turn printer On

Depending on which filament is in your printer (PETG or PLA), print from SD card one of


extrusion calibration PETG.gcode

extrusion calibration PLA.gcode


Once the extrusion shell has completed, measure thickness of  shell with micrometer (or caliper if no micrometer available)
