RE: Octoprint keeps on impressing

Detecting a blob on the nozzle may require an occasional "pose for a photo" pass near the camera, but would be interesting. You might also try for detecting the initial layer on the bed and any significant changes after that initial layer: or detecting the often made cobwebs of a bad print.  But yeah - preventing a mass of plastic and resulting tarball on the hot end is a desirable goal.

There is actually an easy way to detect print progress... but would require the platter to have three pressure sensors... just measure the mass of the print bed and compare it to what should be accumulating.  If it is lighter than expected then you know the missing mass is somewhere it shouldn't be.

The pause and pose did cross my mind as this would have simply been a silhouette comparison, a fairly easy process using edge detection, hence why I think I may need to train an inference model. But hey ho, another project to add to my ever increasing projects I may eventually get round to. Jeez, not enough hours in the day.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

For checking the nozzle, nothing beats being at the printer with a mechanic's inspection mirror (lighted).

You will never train the camera to use a brass brush effectively.

RE: Octoprint keeps on impressing

Nice after a little hicup (Gave up with Python3 for now), got octoprint installed on Raspbian Buster Lite and running from SSD on RPi4 and displaying and operational on Hyperpixel4 touch screen.

For anyone else considering an RPI4, it runs a little on the warm side, so going to add fan to finished case / panel. This may have an effect if considering using an enclosure for the printer as it may be a little too warm. Standard small RPi heatsinks that you just stick onto the chips like in the previous RPi's, I don't think are going to be enough.

I bought this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07WQT1RRZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

since the Hyperpixel4 uses all the pins on the header, so none left to connect any fans to plus it sits right on top of the heatsink leaving no room for fans. Plus I dont like the noise of those little cheap fans they supply with heatsinks, and would rather build my own solution with decent silent fans used.

Now to finish learning Fusion 360, design a new front panel to fit everything, than add plugins, cameras etc

Oh and I see octoprint already has an AI spagetti detective plugin, so I will give it a try first before trying my own version.

I think I live on a perforated plane, full of rabbit holes, I've already looked into changing the firmware to connect the RPi to the printer at 250000 baud instead of the normal 115000 as it works with the clock multiplier better and does not drop any data. 😀  Not that you really notice any dropped data, but hey ho....

Well impressed with that HyperPixel4 - 800 x 400, 18bit colour, 60fps, touch screen.

One of printers is not connecting to my RPi 3B+.  I am not sure why.

Note: Recent Dashboard update killed Webcam. I spent a week searching for the reason...

New update out today fixed it. Just glad to have my Webcam back. Octolapse was never affected.

RE: Octoprint keeps on impressing

I have investigated further and actually there IS a print quality problem with my octoprint. In comparison to the prints from SD card print quality is rather drastically worse. This can be seen now clearly after upgrading the steppers to 0,9°, rods and berarings and BNBSX extruder.

I checked the octoprint forums and that issue is quite common, although it seems noone has been able to exactly put a finger on what is causing it.

I tried safe mode in octoprint - no avail, swapped out the pi - no change, reinstalled octoprint - no change, upped the baud to 250k - no change, reinstalled old debian jessy and very old octoprint 1.1 - issues went away. There is no way i‘m using that old of a version of octoprint as it has several other issues.

Switched to repetier - worked straight out of the box as expected.

@christoph-e5

I have read the concerns but not experienced them.

I finally swapped the RPi 2B for the 3B I meant to use and it's much faster now. I'm not having any quality issues, but it may vary by print detail.

One possibility: If you have installed the popular Octolapse plugin but not fully configured and debugged it, significant stringing can result. Try disabling it if you have it installed.

@bobstro

As the issue also arises in safemode with any plugin disabled I think this can be ruled out.

I‘ll retry octoprint when foosel has 1.4 ready. Doing everything in a single python thread has its limits after all and on that front nothing substantial is announced until 1.4. Also seeing that the issue is open for over a year now without any meaningful insights is not a good prognosis.

I‘m not throwing more raspberys, more money and more time in because I need a working solution for my printer for now.

Ah, didn't catch that in your original post.

Sounds good. I thought you were still trying to troubleshoot the current version. Also looking forward to the update.

Yes, but now you've got a nice collection of RPis for other stuff!

Yes, one runs repetier server and is driving the mk3s and another might end up in a future klipper investiagation..

RE: Octoprint keeps on impressing

Hi all,

7,5 MB in 36 mins just finished. Not was i was expecting with my new MK3S, a Pi4 and octoprint. Isnt the combination of octoprint and a wifi sd card the perfect workaround for the gcode serial transfer issue? Im new into 3D printing and im just wondering, why that is not mentioned in this thread.  Im curious if its possible to map the ocotoprint storage folder to the wifi sd path and use the sd card itself as a transparent micro wifi NAS. Octoprint for monitoring and control over serial. Just ordered a Toshiba Flashair for tests. Found a good Howto for these cards here.

If you are posting the serial transfer time from Raspberry Pi to SD card - well no one runs like that. And why would you want to?

Print speed from the Pi is virtually the same as print speed from the SD card.

RE: Octoprint keeps on impressing

The speed of transfers to the SD card inserted into the printer are controlled by the crude serial interface Marlin provides using the printer's 8 bit hardware. There's not much you can do about it, and the RPi cannot access it directly.

A Toshiba FlashAir works, but I found it a pain in the ass to setup and maintain, and my 16GB card that cost more than my RPi setup died after a year.

I find Octopi much easier to use and just as reliable for all but a few specific cases. Setting up the RPi to act as a file server for PC, Linux and Mac clients is straightforward and a number of automatic sync options work very well for keeping folder trees updated.
