New User with a Couple Octoprint Questions

Hey all!

Got the MK3S+ kit on Black Friday as a family Xmas gift. Built it, worked out the kinks and have been printing great this week!

So of course it’s time to think about OctoPrint!!! My main goal is to be able to monitor remotely and record time lapse videos of builds. I’m planning on Raspberry Pi with USB connection and a cam. I’d like to mount it all to the frame for clean integration.

So I have 4 very brief questions. My goal is to make ONE trip to the computer store tomorrow, so I’m hoping to get this figured out! Thanks in advance!

1) USB cable type

https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/octoprint-building-an-image-for-raspberry-pi-zero-w_2182

The help page very clearly states that a USB-A cable is required. However, the pic and my printer clearly have a USB-B port. I’m guessing a male-male USB-A / USB-B cable is correct?

2) Pi 3B+ vs 4B

Both work fine with Octo. 4B is newer and more powerful but requires a fan. 3B+ does not. Maybe simpler and good enough? Any reason to jump up to the 4B?

3) Camera Type

I’m leaning toward the Logitech C922. C920 and C270 also considered. Maybe the Raspberry Pi camera is a better option? I just am annoyed by the short, unsightly ribbon.

4) Cases

Sensory overload looking at printed case designs and camera mounts! Is there a hands down money rec for one to print? If I went Pi 4B, I might consider buying the Canakit package which has everything. I can’t seem to find a mount for that though to the Prusa.

Thanks all! This is the most fun I’ve had all year!

RE: New User with a Couple Octoprint Questions

Lots of questions.  I'll offer a few answers.

The USB cable is male-A to B.  No mini, micro or anything else.  Same as your desk USB printer.

Choose your pi enclosure before you get a cable.  The one I used for years (and can't find now) attaches to the frame above the Einsy.  If you go with that, you only need 6" cable. Anywhere else, you'll need a longer cable.  I now have the Universal Zaribo Einsy enclosure.  I'd highly recommend any Einsy case that opens outside the printer space.

I use a 3B+.  It's more than adequate.  I have a c920 camera.  Just worked.

Good luck!  Post pictures when you're done.  And by 'done', I mean when you get the Pi up and running.  You'll never be 'done' again.

2.  A fan is not required for a 4.  I have been using one for nearly a year in my enclosure without a fan.  No issues.

3.  Camera: I have a C922, C920, C270, and a lot of generics.  They all work.

4.  I print my own cases from designs off thingverse.
