Re: My handmade enclosure for Prusa

That's good news. 🙂

On thingiverse, this guy recirculates the air inside his enclosure. He says that by the time his build plate cools down after printing, the air has no odor to it. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2517526/comments

So, this raises the question: which approach is better? Recirculate inside the cabinet or exhaust to the room? I guess your approach has the advantage that the enclosure doesn't have to be air tight, because the exhausting creates negative pressure.

Of course, one could do both....

I saw that thing, it depend on what you aim for.
For me i will prefer to push air out, that way i can mantain a healthy temperature inside and not go barbecue electronics, take hot air from inside is a good bet for hot countries.
Also it have the advantage of pull new and clean air inside from gaps, reuse same air will create a pressure and will wear filter faster

Also my design is simpler, can be used inside or outside, can stack as much you want.
I don't like the filter parts he choose, also to have a efficient path you want filters as same size as fan, but hard to find them!

I'm keep searching for a perfect HEPA, but hard to find good ones.
Custom would solve all the problems but...
I found this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/DIY-Universal-hepa-filter-in-addition-to-PM2-5-air-purifier-ventilation-duct-hepa-filter-diameter/32868870239.html
Good to stack two (40mm) or three (60mm), use two 140mm fans, and fill the rest with carbon

Also he have no numbers, i don't trust human factor, i need see numbers!
Sometimes we don't sense things, but they are there, some ABS are not bad as others

I guess I'll be trying this one then: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2105113

because it fits the H13 HEPA filter that I have on order.

Careful with aliexpress or 3rd party filters in general. Some of them stinks more then the plastic fumes.
I prefer to buy some inexpensive replacement filter from any air purifier and build an enclosure for this. For example this one

Re: My handmade enclosure for Prusa

I guess in theory you could use 3 fans: 1 in front of the HEPA filter, then 1 in front of the carbon filter, and then finally 1 after the carbon filter.

Actually all parts come from China, but is hard to find what we need and want
Amazon sellers buy in china and resell.

You can use as many you want or need 🙂
For normal fans you need to go 2 at least.

Re: My handmade enclosure for Prusa

If using granular carbon instead of pellets, how thick do you think the carbon bed would need to be?

Have no ideia, but if it double the performace grab your table and divide deep by two.
Also see that video:
That give an ideia how deep filter must be both HEPA and carbon

I didn't mentioned China as manufacturing land and I didn't mentioned Amazon reseller of Aliexpress (cheap copy) products.
I'm looking for actual brands which are using Amazon as retailer. They are selling exactly the same quality product which you can find in the stores. They meet all required regulations and quality control. The posted example should make it clear.
If you want you can go to the local store and look for the cheapest HEPA replacement filter. Will be the same.

Re: My handmade enclosure for Prusa

The good news is that since we're taking measurements with fairly sensitive equipment, in the end we'll know if the filter is doing a good enough job, regardless of where it was sourced from. I think the HEPA filters will probably last a long time, though, so I'm going for high quality filters from trustworthy brands. In addition, the Electrolux H13 HEPA filters are designed so that they can be washed off and re-used, so their amortized cost should be lower.

I think one can debate whether an H14 HEPA filter is warranted or not, but those are available too. You'd probably need a lot more fan power though.

The carbon filters are the harder part of this, since those need to be DIY, unless you're prepared to spend a lot of money. I like Tiago's solution, and since it works, I may not even bother with granular versus pellets.

For GAC i have buy this 2KG: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GRANULAR-ACTIVATED-CARBON-Marine-Aquarium-Fish-Filter-Koi-Pond-all-water-types/261530743716

My final design will be: Pre Filter + 40mm of HEPA (2x20mm hepa filter) + 30mm Fill with GAC + 15mm Carbon active combined filter to trap the GAC in place and lock the filters. 86mm tall filter over 110mm^2 area

New update

This time i come with effective results and good data
SUNLU ABS Black

50% of print, FAN OFF:

Results and data:

Particles outside enclosure while printing fan off

Particles at fan output while printing on fan on

Particles at fan output while printing fan on after 1 minute

Particles at fan output while printing fan on after 2 minute

Numbers and graph speak by itself.
Clean room air, ABS is not a problem anymore!
Last thing will be improve filter with the new carbon particles.

Re: My handmade enclosure for Prusa

Nice work!

The main unknown now is how well it's filtering the very small 0.3u particles. There's likely to be a lot more of those than the bigger ones by maybe 100x inside the enclosure. At least, that was true for my measurements on PETG, so I'm only guessing the same may be true for ABS.

There are various levels of HEPA filter, and I don't know the rating on the one that your using. Mine will be H13, which should filter out 99.95% of the small particles. There are also ULPA filters, which are even more stringent than HEPA filters and can filter 99.995%. It's important that all the air go through the filter and not sneak around the edges, so a good filter seal is very important for whatever filter you use.

Regardless, I think yours are the best posted measurements I've seen anywhere. None of the other enclosures I've seen on thingiverse or here have provided measured data as to performance, like you have. So, thanks for sharing the results of your great work!

My 2KG GAC arrived. Mod is completed.

Notes:

  • Added one more HEPA filter (40mm HEPA in total now)

  • Granular is much smaller than i thought

  • Now it have less suction power, but still able to pull the air, a dual fan config is now recommended with such deep

  • Much more filled area, the tiny gac fill every gap

  • More area filled but less weight overall compared with previous carbon

  • Will test results latter

Nice work! How thick is the GAC layer?

Didn't measure but easy to calculate:
    HEPA Filter = +/- 20mm
    Carbon filter = +/- 17mm

    Total filter enclosure height: 86mm

    86 - ( 20*2 + 17 ) = 29mm
So GAC layer is +/-29mm tall and 115mm^2

Notes: The second hepa filter have GAC fill inside the slots due to tiny gac size, so we can count with more 15mm and (115mm/2)^2.
The carbon filter have 17mm, it have a carbon active mesh and GAC like trap inside but made from coconut shell.

I hope to get better results and cleaner air once i turn on the fan when enclosure is saturated

Ok, Fan still able to purge air.
Right after turn fan ON - Before: PM2.5(33) PM10(37) MAX!
Right after turn fan ON - Now: PM2.5(42) PM10(55) MAX!

It seens that i get a better result with previous filter with 300g of carbon petels, not that is more effective but the true is i have added one more HEPA filter that take 20mm and that way i end to have less GAC grams inside compared to before. That may mean that HEPA filter is not what matter most with ABS, but carbon is.
I may have to remove one HEPA and fill that space with GAC and compare.
Still a difference of 10 is not that huge

Here the data with the new filter:

Right after turn fan ON, less than a minute values go low as 20 PM
