I have heaps of spares so did a "new" hot end build (easier than cleaning off all the crud). Shame it happened now as the knock off "yellow" version of the Magnum has just hit Customs so I should have it next week. Looking forward to seeing how the knock off goes, esp the insulator as I've broken every single one from Slice.

My Magnum Clone arrived today and while it looks good, I'll not have the time till the weekend to have a play. I'm particularly interested in the Insulator which seems better than the original (which I've broken each one) and the ability to clamp the thermister is a good idea. Also comes with a 0.4 Nozzle but I have no idea what it is made of. If you click on the pic, you can see a slight flaw at the top of the copper heat sink where it has not been milled (or cast out??) out correctly.

I picked me up one of the chinese clones, anybody try this far right adapter with the different cooling fan on the far right for just the MK3S?
Which one should I go with?

Were you able to play around with your magnum clone a bit? I'm currently thinking if I shall go the magnum clone way or the E3D volcano way. Didn't decide yet so some experiences from exp. ppl. on one or the other would be amazing.

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate everyones feedback, so thanks for jumping in. When I read your message, I would assume that you'd take the Mosquito clone route again? Do you also have the comparison to the Volcano? How does it compete? Which nozzle(s) are you using with it?

I also got filament jammed in the mosquito heat break some how after the filament snapped just below the bondtech feed gears. Maybe I should make a habit of using cleaner filament after changing filament types, even similar PETG types. Now I will have to wait til I can get spare magnum heat breaks and nozzles.

Most of the discussion I see here is regarding the standard Mosquito. How many of you have tried the Mosquito Magnum and noticed no drop in quality? With a comparable Volcano, it explicitly advertises drop in quality (as you cannot print reliably with the same lower layer heights as the original). The only way I'd consider this and messing with my E3Dv6 setup that took me weeks to get right is to be able to print at same (or better) quality as the current E3D setup at higher volumetric speeds.
The original one is just insanely expensive for some CNC'd metal so I'd definitely get a clone to try out first, and then support the company if everything works out.

No drop in quality with the Mosquito Magnum. The biggest advantage I have seen is printing at higher temps. I have started printing come material that are incomparable with the standard V6 hot end.

Interesting, that makes it very intriguing indeed. What kind of materials? So you're able to print at the smaller layer heights (i.e. 0.05mm ultradetail w/ stock 0.4mm nozzle) with no quality loss? How much faster are you printing? What nozzle are you using? Default extruder or BMG? Sorry, I have not been following the thread completely.
I guess you'd see more of a benefit printing fast with a bigger 0.6-0.8 nozzle but to have the ability to retain the quality with smaller prints is a win-win. I've heard that it's mainly useful just for the higher temps, but it seems like this thing will also require much lower maintenance as it's all one piece.

Since updating my MK3S extruder to the parts that wouldn't melt would involve a full rebuild anyway, I went for the Mosquito upgrade, plus 50W heater and Mosquito high-temperature thermistor. I wanted the geared extruder and am interested in some higher temperature materials, but the deciding factor was the mechanics of the heater block...the stock extruder setup always seemed flimsy and was very awkward to change nozzles with. I also liked the idea of the nickel-plated copper block...I've been using nickel-plated copper nozzles.
One annoyance was the number of parts that had to be scavenged, meaning I couldn't rebuild the old extruder as a backup. For the price, you should get enough parts to build a complete extruder. Only two issues with assembly and installation: the PTFE tube was a few mm too long and needed trimming, and the main shaft/Bondtech drive gear wouldn't align properly when the two halves of the extruder were put together...like the shaft was a mm or two short. I was able to push it into alignment, hopefully it stays there.
It seems to be maintaining the extruder temperature as measured by the thermistor, and the Mosquito thermistor and heat bed seem to agree within a fraction of a degree when at room temperature.
I had severe under-extrusion, and noticed it wasn't moving the filament nearly far enough when loading or unloading. I'd done a full factory reset after updating the firmware, but after some digging, sending the M503 command through the Octoprint console returned values that didn't match what was set in the firmware. M502 reset them and the extruder's now extruding properly, but I'm confused as to why the factory reset didn't clear this stuff out.
Of course, the first test print after that, a Prusa logo in Prusa silver PLA, jumped off the bed and attempted to murder my nice, new, expensive, non-Prusa extruder. This is why I like PETG...fortunately I caught it soon, and the nickel coating functions as advertised. The next print, after giving the bed a good scrubbing, at least completed the print, though there's still some issues.

Yesterday's Prusa logo print gave me a very floppy print with the outer perimeter peeling off and the layers not fully filled in. After restarting, doing PID calibration, and resetting the thumb wheel (which I'd been tweaking to see if it had any effect while diagnosing the issue), I got a print at least as good as what I got from the stock extruder, and then did a very nice silver PLA treefrog with only some minor defects, both using the .gcode that came with the printer.
I'll use up some of this silver PLA and then see how it does with PETG and flex.

How are you satisfied with this clone in comparison with standard MK3 e3d, and may I ask what kind of extruder case did you use?
I am thinking about obtain mosquito clone, but I am not sure what else will I have to get (I understand, I have to buy new heating cartridge and termistor). But what about the extruder case, connectors etc?

I have both the clone, MK3S and Mosquito nonclone. I have not noticed much a difference except less jams. Mosquitos seem more sensitive to the filament end being trimmed prior to insertion.

What mount are you guys using for your Magnum? This one seems like the only semi-official one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3515782 . What firmware changes did you have to do to get it to work with the MMU2S? I hear loads/unloads have lots of issues due to the larger melting zone of the Magnum.
I'm kind of hesitant to mod it at all right now with the E3Dv6 working so well w/ the MMU2S. I rather not take it out of commission yet if I don't have to; the Mosquitos seem higher maintenance than it's worth unless you want to print at super high temps or fast (Magnum). I have it in hand but trying to get all the info up front before I do anything.

I really like the Mosquito (original) and find it to be far less fussy than the E3DV6.

I'm sure it's great, I just haven't found the time to install it just yet. It's a lot of work (and probably troubleshooting thereafter) to get it installed with the BMG. I saw the steps here and figured I'd do it at a later date: https://support.bondtech.se/c/MK2.5S_and_MK3S_Mosquito . It's basically a complete teardown and reinstall of the extruder, which is expected but even the original took me a lot of time to put together. I'm busy printing face shields and supporting the local community at the moment so hopefully when the pandemic is over I can look into it.
