Filament holder... from a broomstick

I bought my printer as a kit, and when I tried to attach the filament holders they seemed super tight. Then I thought that having to do that when ever I want to change the filament is going to suck.

And having that weight on the frame seemed sort of bad, consider how it might affect the print accuracy and so forth if the weight would affect the alignment of the head, printer IS shaking quite much when it's printing small details and fills.

I have my printer on my "workshop" so I had an idea to use tool shelf parts together with clothing hangar arms coupled with a wooden broomstick... so far it has been working. and I could have several spools ready for instant filament change if I wanted. Need to print stoppers (cooler than a screw) so that the broomstick cannot slide off the hook.

Sorry for the rotated images... forum does that for some reason. Right click, and open image opens it correctly in a new tab, at least with PC + chrome.

I think the stick can not have affect on print qualitty. You first MK2S lift itself on fillament and stay "climbing" for weekend. There are lot of power in here. Not in mk3 but on mk2s is!
For shaking Z axis try to tight belts, check looseness of nozzle (tendence of whole extruder to rotate and bow. If nothing help slow down a print.

University: MK2S upgraded to MK3 with MMU2.0
Home: MK3
Materials: ABS; ASA; PETG; PET; PLA; Nylon; Nylon Carbon; CPE;
SW: Freecad 0.18; Slicer PE And still generating more troubles than whole forum together.

I have no problems with print quality, everything is working like is should. I lifted the filament reels high up for other reasons... don't really get what you are trying to say...

I think what he may have been saying is that he thinks the stick wouldn’t improve the print quality over using the holder attached to the frame.

Personally, I think on rapid movements the spool starts swaying, and with the frame-attached holder it may impact quality. I recently switched to a spool holder with a bearing, 4 actually, and I have also noticed an improvement in quality. Coincidence?

So, I think you have a good thing there.

Re: Filament holder... from a broomstick

have you guys considered say 6x4 ptfe tube, between a fixed point below the reel, to the top of the extruder, to offload the lifting effect on the extruder, of demanding filament from a reel above,
the 4mm id would cause minimal friction, and if the ptfe forms a lazy S it will minimise side pull, if the reel is not directly above the printer

Having the reel off from the frame is one thing, but to me it's also a bonus that changing filament color is easier when you have 2-3 reels already up there. There's more space on the stick, but they would be too off-centre I think... especially when your filament is getting to the last meters the reel sides might cause problems if the print head movement would cause the filament to rub against the reel wall.

What I have been thinking is making some sort of printed insert for the reels, so that the inserts outer diameter would match the reel hole and and inner diameter the broomstick... and so that I'd have only relative thin walls against the broomstick to minimize the the drag & friction. Difficult to explain, but easy to do...

I've been thinking also changing the broomstick to aluminium tube, to reduce the friction even more. It ended up being originally a wooden broomstick because I happened to have one at hand, and it worked 🙂

Re: Filament holder... from a broomstick

I've been thinking about this approach but I am positive that one of these days the other end will slip off while I'm switching out a filament and come crashing down on my printer. I'm just not willing to take that chance because some people in this forum (not me of course) have been known to drink and print. Dangerous I know but not yet illegal.

I'm planning to do end stoppers, of course. That would ensure that reels don't slide off, and also secure the stick between the holders. As it is now, yes, been close to dropping them 🙂
