Am I the only idiot that can't figure Octoprint out?

Hello,

I've got dozens of hours into this. I've even read that painfully long and for me useless Octoprint Issues thread. I've searched here, Reddit, Octoprint, google in general and I can't get this sorted out. The main issue is I just can't seem to initiate a SD print through Octoprint. First, i'm new to 3D printing and RPi (although I program industrial robots at work). Admittedly i'm not a script kiddie by any means. I pretty good at following instructions (even shitty ones), but I'm not rocket scientist by any definition. Here's my pain:

-I've got Octoprint successfully installed on a RPi 4b, 4gb.

-It's a Canakit using their power plug.

-I'm running the latest version of Octoprint (1.3.12) downloaded from them and installed following their instructions.

-I say succesful because I can access it on my network, it claims to connect using Auto/Auto, and my camera works fine from various apps and browsers.

-I've loaded a MK3s printer profile using the various (and often conflicting) setting posted in these forums. I leave serial port and baud rate on zero/zero.

What's happening:

When I pick a gcode from the SD viewer section of octoprint and tell it to print, the printer starts the heat up process, then usually it goes into the bedleveling sequence doing it's bobbing across the 12 points on the build plate, then it goes to home and usually does it's purge run. Next, it moves to a point on the build plate and starts to extrude and move and then...stops. Yep, stops dead and just sits there. What I have noticed is that typically both the nozzle and bed target readings show zero/zero suddenly. Then, I try to Cancel through Octo and it will either start printing again (until it stops moments later, again) or I have to hit the disconnect and then the reset button on the Prusa or it just sits there, maintaining the heat the whole time. I've looked at the terminal but it's all greek to me. I've read other posts with folks using similar hardware (mk3/3s and RPi3,3b,3+,4b etc) happily printing away with Octoprint 1.3.12 but I'm getting no-where. It's as if it's having a comms/buffering issue but I can't imagine why. It does choose a baud rate of 115200 which seems correct based on what I've found here. Also, here's a copy of my terminal scripts from the last failure if it's any help:

Nevermind. I can't paste the log into this website for some reason...

Try turning your filament sensor off in firmware.

Or alternately try OctoPi which is an SD card image with the Raspberry os and Octoprint all precofigured. Also the Octoprint forum is very helpful.

Thanks guys. Sincerely appreciate the replies. Is the filament sensor still an issue with the MK3s filament sensor upgrade? That’s one of the things that have made troubleshooting via forums so difficult. So many different iterations of both the Prusa and also the RPi in just a short couple of years. Hard to tell when problems were born or died lol.

I’ll have to check out Octopi. I’m under the assumption my install onto my RPi 4b was successful as its on my network and I’m having no problem tying into it and making changes (loading plugins, using safe mode, etc. ), but damned if I know lol. I’ll try anything at this point. It seems like Octoprint on my RPi is working, and my printer works well alone, that somehow I’ve got communication between them assed up.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Pete

Ok. Strange but happy news to report. Last night in frustration I powered down the Prusa, left octoprint open in my browser, and went to bed. Today when I stopped in to look at it, the Octo page said “update in progress” and then “update successful”. Odd, but ok, didn’t see a stable update coming for a while from the octoprint forums/webpage but cool. So I powered up the prusa, told Octo to connect which it did quickly. I selected a random file on the SD card and hit print. Lo and behold, preheat values populated correctly, preheat happened, and bobs your uncle! The damned thing actually started to print! And beautifully too. And get this, it even stopped correctly and prompted me to push the knob and remove the filament. It appears I picked the two color prusa badge included on the SD card. Cut and re-entered the same filament (didn’t have another color handy), followed the lcd prompts, and the thing just went to town! I’m sooo excited. And here’s the strangest part! I’m still on version 1.3.12?!? WTH? Yesterday I was on 1.3.12, it wouldn’t work. Last night in the darkness it claims it updated, and now she prints like a pro! Praise the gods! Weirdest computer experience ever lol. The print just finished and it looks great.

@pdccd try restarting octoprint or the RPi. The newer version may not be loaded.

Only one?  I would say no.  I had troubles and needed my son.  Be patient.

Hello Fellas. Ive rebooted and restarted multiple times. Mysteriously still showing 1.3.12. I’m looking under settings>software update tab. Is this the wrong place to look?

Thanks Charles. Now I’m trying to get access outside my network. What a PITA. patience is defiantly virtue.

ps. Bobstro, thank you immensely. I’ve found your blog and posts here to be incredible resources.
