Slicer progression from noob to intermediate

Hey everyone,

I have a MK3 on order (is it March yet?? how about now?!?) and I've spent the last several months using a Lulzbot Taz 4 and the Lulzbot version of Cura for slicing (with occasional tests of OctoPi's Cura plugin). My most common Lulzbot-Cura advanced/expert settings have typically been playing with retractions, varying speeds, first layer setup, adhesions and supports, and trying Cura's version of "vase mode", all with varying degrees of success.

While I'm fairly comfortable with Cura, I'm curious how easily I can jump into the PrusaControl version of Slic3r -- I didn't have a ton of success using Slic3r with the Taz 4 because there wasn't a good printer profile and I was too new to have the patience/answers to build one quick enough to satiate my desire to get printing. I also see a ton of people here promoting Simplify3D, of which I'm not opposed to making an investment, but I'm curious what more experienced printer-folk recommend to get started, get comfortable with, then progress to more advanced tools, or how much tweaking you do in a slicer from one print (or material) to the next, etc..

Thanks!

The Slic3r PE is wonderful. The configurations are very complete and require no tinkering for most prints. Why not load it now and take a look?
