Slic3r 1.37.1 and PrusaControl don't have fine layersanymore

I just finished my multimaterial upgrade and downloaded new drivers, software updates, etc. I just notices that neither Slic3r nor Prusa Control offer layers heights below 0.15mm now. Before I could take layers down to an ultrfine 0.05mm.

what happened? Am I missing something, or did I change a setting somewhere that messes with this?

Thanks.

Andy

Hi Andy,

the MMU extruders use Bondtech hobbed gears to move the filament, these are larger diameter than the original hobbed gear.

the resultant effect is that the extruder becomes ineffective at very low filament feed speeds. as far as I am aware the lowest layer height achieveable is 0.7mm although I have not tried it myself.

I'm really hoping you mean 0.07mm (70 micron)..... 😉

That would be down to Joan typing on her phone (again) 😉

MMU won't go below 0.15 in multi material mode. You should be able to get finer in single material mode.

Colin, why would that matter? Whether using Single Material Mode or MM mode, the ability of individual extruders to get down to 0.05 mm layer height shouldn't matter, at least according to the discussion above.

Got me. That's a question for Prusa engineers. It's a software limitation.

This same issue caught my attention the other day. I thought I was going nuts but eventually figured it out. It's fine I guess, just a little disappointing, but I am thrilled with my multi-color prints thus far and have really only been using .20 layers with linear advance. Zero fails so far out of 7 prints. One running for as long as 24 hours. No real loss as it can still function as a single with normal layer heights. I am considering leaving this unit dedicated to multi-color as I have MK2-->MK3 upgrades coming, but no MMY yet available. I'm not quite sure why it wouldn't work just without the runout sensors but if anyone knows, please let me know.

Thanks

Doug
