Prusa Controll / mk3 / Times totally off
Hey!
Got my mk3 last week and am slicing with Prusa Control because it works great. Only the estimated time is way off!
Currently I am printing something that was Estimated with 3h 31min.
Printer sais I am at 40% with 2:11h in. Thats more like 5 1/2h than 3 1/2h.
Is there something I can configure, that makes this a little more reliable?
I was using my UP!2 plus for the last couple of years, and those estimates were quite accurate since the beginning.
Thanks, Jens

Hmm, just sliced the same STL with Slic3r Prusa Edition and got an estimated time of 5:12. Thats way more accurate. Maybe I should try Slic3r than 😉

Hi Jens,
one of the problems we face is that the slicer doesn't know what the printer firmware settings are, so cannot take them into account.
Prusa Control shows different results to Slic3r PE... i believe this is because the slicer software is still in development, and new releases are happenning more frequently foe Slic3r, as a result. Prusa Control will catch up. but it's not the current focus of development!

Grrrrr... part of that last reply dissappeared....
the printer firmware manages a number of parameters which affect print speed.
if we just look at acceleration, (Yes I know we can set acceleration in Slic3r) however if the printer has a slower max accelleration than we set in the slicer, the printer firmware will overrule the gcode settings.
a small intricate model will then be more affected than a large simple model, because the acceleration controlled moves will reach full speed for longer in the large mode, whilst the small model may never reach full speed...

Yeah, I understand, that there might be slight differences in the calculation, but its a brand new mk3 with not a single change to anything yet, with the latest Prusa Control using the correct profile. I just hoped, that it was closer 😉 At this point, there should be not a single unknown parameter for the calculation 😉
As Slic3r is nearer at the estimated time, I will use that in the future. I like to know when a print is done, as I don't like to leave the printer alone .

Hi Uija,
latest driver update says
but doesn't mention Prusa Control changes
maybe Prusa control is simply a little out of date!

I like to know when a print is done, as I don't like to leave the printer alone .
When I first started printing I thought like this too. Eventually I figured out I needed to apply industrial HSE principles. Know and manage the risks- the printer is fused, the powers supply is fused, and my wall plug (I use UK 3 pin square plugs) is fused and I have a smoke detector just a few feet away. Our printers have thermal runaway protection cut off built in. Not saying there is no risk, just that it can be reduced. You have to decide what level of risk you are willing to accept.
Just wait till you do your first 26 hour print - or more - like me you are liable to fall asleep in the chair if you try to monitor that all the way. I have one object queued that will take over 72 hours to print, so at some stage I will have to decide when to start it.
Happy printing,

If the only reason for the time estiamtes of the preusa control is different settings in firmware vs. preusa control, and that is information that is included in the printer profile - it seems to be just a matter of someone with the right knowledge updating the printer profile used in preusa control and make that alone or a new version of Preusa Controll with that setting bundled available.
For me at last preusa controll is a great product as it is and it does all the task I need it for. The only real problem is that it sucks at time estimates for my MK3. This problem does however affect everyone that uses it one every print they plan to make.
The cost of fixing the issue seems to be low.
The value of fixing the issue seems to be high.
These two factors compined indicate that this issue might be resonable to put at or near the top of the development que for the Preusa Controll.'
So, maybe it should be the current focus of development?
Re: Prusa Controll / mk3 / Times totally off
Where do you get to the print time estimate in Slic3r Prusa Edition? I've been using Prusa control because I can't see the estimate in Slic3r and because Control has much better auto-arrange than Slic3r, Slic3r keeps arranging parts extremly far away from each other in a grid that generally only has one part actually on the build plate 🙁
Re: Prusa Controll / mk3 / Times totally off
After you save the gcode file the time estimate shows up as the last line in the information box bottom right. It would be helpful if this showed earlier as you could then add estimated time in the filename as Prusa does on the included test prints.
You can click and drag on the individual parts once slic3r separates them and reposition them closer together yourself.
