Odd Slic3r behavior

Different times when I load an .stl into slicer it will appear incomplete. I have seen this different times and do not understand why it is doing this. I can load the same .stl into KISS slicer and it wont do that.

However, when i slice a file with kiss, and then load the .gcode file into pronterface, it doesnt print properly.

The only way I can get around this is, is to slice the file in kiss slicer, move it onto an SD card and then print from the SD card on the printer itself.

This is obnoxious and annoying. I prefer to use slic3r and pronterface. Anyone experience this?

Some of the files I am trying to print are the .stl files for the printer plastic parts, that I would assume Josef posted on the site.

Thanks,
Max

Hi Max

Welcome to the forums.

I can't really help you very much as I have not experienced what you are describing and I have not read any other forum member making mention of this.

I don't use Slic3r, just Cura and KISS. Cura is good as you can print directly; KISS is the better of the two slicers, but has the downside that you cannot print directly.

Have you considered Octoprint? This is using a Raspberry Pi to control the printer so that you don't have to have your PC turned on all the time. It has a web interface and you simply drag and drop the gcode files there.

I have two printers, both controlled by Octoprint and it does work rather well. I consider the (low) cost of the Octoprint system well worth it so that I can use KISS in a simple manner.

Incidentally, it is possible to connect a webcam to Optoprint which enables you to view and control your printer wherever you may be.

Re: Odd Slic3r behavior

I do have a couple of Raspberry Pi 2's. One of them is currently somewhat of a media center, the other however is the flight controller for my drone. I have thought about setting up octoprint on the one but I havent got around to it. Currently I can view my printer through a webcam and I can already control my printer from anywhere by accessing it remotely through Team Viewer. I can do it via my phone or my laptop here at work.

I have used KISS slicer, but I have had better luck with Slic3r as far as prints go. Right now I am printing all the parts for another printer and all but the ones I mentioned above are coming out perfect. I am just really disappointed that some of the other files seem to glitch when I open them in Slic3r.

really bummed....

Try running the problematic stls thru https://makeprintable.com or Netfabb basic

Unfortunately neither of those applications worked for me. I just loaded the .stl into Rhino and repaired them, then exported them out as a new.stl file.

They printed absolutely perfect. I have really got my printer dialed in now and it is printing wonderfully! I will make a new post sometime displaying the things I have created.

I am having so much trouble exporting my model as an .stl from rhino. The slic3r won't recognize them, they are greyed out and slic3r wont let me open them. I've been researching for days trying to solve this and have found nothing! Please help!!
