MK2 Silk Screen for Simplify3D

I'm lacking the know how to do what I want. I have the silk screen for the heatbed in several different CAD formats. What I want is an STL file that uses the lines of the CAD file with a 1mm line width (on center) and a 2mm line height. I've included the ZIP file with my attempts at doing this.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Frankly, I don't understand your request / question.

With Simplify3D, it is possible to specify a custom bed shape. I want to do that with this silk screen, but I need it to be an STL file that can be seen below the print bed graphic in Simplify3D.

I have already tried to convert it myself with the included CAD files that I posted to this thread and failed. I am probably missing something during the conversion process.

For the purpose of positioning your objects on the bed more accurately?

Correct. In many cases, I want to avoid placing my models on the screw holes near the center of the build plate. I've also had some adhesion issues near the silk screens in the upper right and lower right corners of the build plate. I realize these CAD drawings don't include the silk screen for the lower right corner.

With all respect, we are busy enough to develop and support the free Slic3r. We don't have the resources to support a commercial slicer. You paid enough for the S3D license, therefore they should help you.

The point of this thread was to ask for the community for help. I know there are many very knowledgeable people out there.

Maybe to could just move the model to a different position on the bed. I use OS X and holding down the command key enables me to move a model around on the bed and place it where ever I want to on the bed. I'm sure these are available in the Windows Version somewhere.

As for converting to an STL try this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:66115 it's a windows app. I see there is a OpenSCAD file in your zip file, can't you just use OpenSCAD to save as STL?

Sorry i can't hep further

Can you please check if this is useful?

That's pretty close. It at least gives the screw hole placement. Now for the silk screen grid... And I don't use Windows, only Linux, so I can't use that thingiverse program. Sorry.

Re: MK2 Silk Screen for Simplify3D

Thanks to madhu.n, I finally got something workable in OpenSCAD. Your work was appreciated.

The source file was not easy to find. I keep forgetting to change the branch to MK2.

The process of converting this from the .BRD file involves using Eagle to select the layers to export and export them to .DXF. Then taking FreeCAD, select the models you want to export and export that to .scad for OpenSCAD. Then in OpenSCAD, it took tons of editing with the "Thrown Together" view and set the view to top view and fit everything. I think it took me more than 2 days to edit this thing to be useable.

I'm includng the fully edited OpenSCAD source file and the resulting STL file. The origin in the STL file matters to Simplify3D so you can use it is a background. TinkerCAD seems to orient the origin in the center of the model making any STL files created by TinkerCAD useless in Simplify3D to be used as a background. OpenSCAD with its transform() method allows you to move the origin to be anywhere in the model.

This model currently does NOT contain the Caution statement in the top right corner of the print bed, nor does it contain the text in the lower right corner about being an Original Prusa i3 MK2. I hope to include these in a future version.

To use this, you need to go to Tools --> Options --> Machine tab and under "Printer Models" add this STL at the bottom. You can optionally go to the Visualizations tab and uncheck "Include buld table in virtual environment". The build table can mask the STL file, so I tend to have it unchecked.

Looks and appears to work amazing. Many, many thanks!!!

Re: MK2 Silk Screen for Simplify3D

How does one get the model to "stick" in S3D? Every time I re-open S3D I seem to have to re-add the STL. Kind of defeats the purpose. :-/

Re: MK2 Silk Screen for Simplify3D

if you specify the absolute path to the STL in your FFF profile file, it should stick: https://forum.simplify3d.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5403

So export your current settings to an FFF profile, open it with your preferred plaintext or XML editor and specify an absolute path to the STL. Then import the FFF profile again. Close S3D, re-open S3D et voilà!

Re: MK2 Silk Screen for Simplify3D

If anyone is interested, i've updated ayourk's openscad file with a few extras including the ability to map damage on your PEI sheet so it will show in Simplify3D. Thanks for creating the original OpenSCAD file ayourk! 🙂
