Re: Migrating an i3 Mk2 from RAMBO to Smoothieboard

It's not about machine design, sometimes things go wrong during print and I rather let the printer lose some steps instead of forcing it to suffer some damage. But I would like to know when it happens.

For me, I won't believe it until I see it and I won't throw away my hard-earned cash on a promise that may or may not be true.

Show me a video of a PR "original" i3 Mk2 with MM upgrade working as well as the existing setup and I will purchase one today.

4 years ago I would have gone through the effort, but today I just have to say : Just ask any Smoothieboard owner ... The system is sufficiently established and has a sufficiently crazy fanclub at this point, we don't really bother proving anything anymore.

If it's not worth your effort to make sure it works, then it's obviously not worth my efforts either.

And of course you cannot show me any video of Smoothie working on a Mk2MM setup. But you had the opportunity to do just that. Sorry.

You are missing something, not me. Smoothieboard is the second most used board after RAMPS in the Reprap community, and it's still growing month after month.
What I'm saying is that in that context it's not worth it for me to spend my time trying to convince you when hundreds of other users convince themselves every month with the available evidence.
My time is much better spent improving smoothie's hardware or software than convincing people to use the system when they are missing out by not convincing themselves.

You are correct in that I need to read more. Fortunately, I found this:

NOTE there is NO extrapolation in this version, so printing (or milling) MUST not be done outside of the probed area

on this page: http://smoothieware.org/zprobe#rectangular-grid-compensation

That alone will significantly reduce the print area. When many of us are looking to increase printable area, this is not particularly helpful.

This is a warning more about users who probe a small area and then rely on extrapolation to compensate for much larger areas. Compensation is still done, just not extrapolated. This means this is perfectly usable on a prusa i3 mk2 with it's 9-point grid.
As I said, and let me repeat this, there are plenty of i3 mk2 -> smoothieboard converts and they are very happy with it.
There aren't any big gotchas like you seem to suspect here, and if there were we'd be working on them.

I remember years ago Prusa himself was saying Smoothie is the future of Reprap, and I suspect he didn't switch his machines just for cost reasons or because his team was so familiar with Marlin.

That's perfectly fine, you don't really seem to want to be convinced :). I want to re-iterate that we have a lot of happy mk2+smoothie users, but being overly skeptical is your right.

I guess that's why I am usually an "early adopter" and volunteer so often for Alpha/Beta testing. 🙂

Oh, do do want to be convinced, but currently, I am a very long way from spending my money.

OK, let's make it easy. Link a YouTube video of a Mk2 running Smoothie doing initial calibration and bed-level probing.

I don't own a prusa i3, I'm just telling you what users who contact me about their machines tell me. I'm sure at some point somebody will post such a video, there might even be one now, dunno. There aren't that many users who have smoothiefied mk2s, so it's not reasonable to expect there would be video. My point was just that they exist and that their machine works fine. If you don't believe me, we then go into "I'm a liar"-type conversation and I'm not going to be a part of that.

And to be clear : The mk2 is a really great machine, and I can completely understand somebody falling in love with it so much, that they can't imagine there's a way to make it even better out there 🙂 If you add to that the fact you don't have the money for the switch, your skepticism is then probably just a way to protect yourself from the pain of not being able to improve the machine. So I'll just leave you alone, and we'll talk again when somebody in this forum reports on their mk2/smoothie adventures.

Please don't make such assumptions. I have neither the time nor the money to potentially waste.

I misunderstood something you had said a while back. Anyway, I think we have both made our positions very clear, we probably want to leave the post to other people with questions or interesting things to say 🙂 I'm around if people have actual questions about Smoothie 🙂

😎
When will v2 or v2-pro be out? Or when is it expected to be out? I know, they say "no timetable or planned release date, so please stop asking", but what is your personal estimate? 😉 I'm really interested in buying one, but ... nothing available.

We really don't know or we would say. We have dozens of currently active contributors on this project, and we are even paying one professional developer full time for some of the low level work.

We are going to produce a first prototype of the v2-mini very soon, design of the v2 an v2-pro should come soon after that, but we really can't give any date.

As I said in many places, it's really a collosal project, nobody has tried something this big ever before, most of what we are doing has never been tried before, and it's still going to take time.

Ok, so is it "not many" or "a lot"?

I do have a Smoothie that I had connected to an FT-5. After fighting with it for 2 weeks I gave up and put the MKS board back on that it came with. Trying to make it work with the BLtouch just wasn't worth the effort. I don't think I would have much luck getting it to work correctly on my MK2's especially when the MM upgrade is delivered.

This really isn't difficult : enough that it's known it works well, not enough that youtube is full of videos about it.

What problems did you have with it, and why didn't you ask for help ? Two weeks of problems really really isn't the typical Smoothie experience ...

Re: Migrating an i3 Mk2 from RAMBO to Smoothieboard

Well, so far we have had 2 users on this forum who have admitted to using the Smoothie and both have moved away.

Nobody so far has made mention of moving from the RAMBo to a Smoothie.

And there are over 23,000 forum members.

I'm not sure why you think that means anything. Smoothie has tens of thousands of happy users, including users of the mk2, and many more not specifically using the mk2, but using similar machines with similar features.

Reading back on this conversation, I really feel you have unreasonable standards of evidence, and it's not very productive talking to you. So again, I'll be here if anyone has questions about Smoothie, but I'm done with the "prove smoothie does something thousands of people know it does" discution.

Re: Migrating an i3 Mk2 from RAMBO to Smoothieboard

😎 the initiator of this thread wanted to "get out the best of his i3 mk2" and thought a good idea would be using such a smoothieboard.

😕 i think that, beside of arthur.w3 (who suddenly appeared here after the thread was opend and still is arguing through rose-coloured glasses, like one of smoothieboards developers), we can all agree that there is no point to do so, if you want to keep the printer being our beloved and successful i3 mk2.

👿 sorry mates, but i feel as if our prusa forum has been hijacked by some kind of advertisment campaign by the smoothieboard disciples and this thread is drifting away in a more and more political or religious discussion ...

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...
