COM port for Pronterface

I've just gotten the printer set up and I'd like to get it connected to my old Win7 computer to run Slic3r and Pronterface. Slic3r is installed and works fine. However in the Pronterface setup it requires I specify a COM port. When I plug the printer into the computer USB port it tells me it's COM3. But when I go to the dropdown list in Pronterface to specify the COM port there is no COM3. It lists COM1, COM6, COM7, ... No COM3. When I unplug from the USB port and plug it into another USB socket it still says it's on COM3.
What to do to get Pronterface to communicate with the printer?

Thanks for any help,
Ted

Re: COM port for Pronterface

have you properly installed the driver for the usb2serial interface (inside the prusa) that comes with the driver package ?
maybe another program is blocking the com-port (some slicers have a build in printer control) ?
check the used com-port at the device manager inside your win7 system settings, should look somehow like this:

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

I think so, but how would I know? Is there a way to see or test this?

I attach three screenshots. One is the list of COM ports in Device Manager, the second is the details of the COM6 port, and the third is the COM port dropdown menu on Pronterface.
Device Manager seems to think that almost all my COM ports are Bluetooth, yet as far as I know this old machine has no Bluetooth capability. If this is the problem, how can I correct it?
I have five physical USB ports, but as far as I can see from this only one is actually linked to a COM port.
