Z-Banding?

I've been using this printer for a few days now, and I have to say I'm VERY impressed with the print quality. I've been using an Ultimaker in my research lab for months and this is just as good if not better.

That being said, I do have one problem I need to fix. I've noticed now that I am getting noticeable "banding" on the walls of my objects. It's more visible on taller objects.

My questions is, what is causing this? Could it be backlash in the Z axis? I am thinking about printing a new x-end motor that includes housing for a spring that would create tension on the z-nut . I'd appreciate any advice on this!

Re: Z-Banding?

Could you print a cylinder roughly 40mm in diameter and few cm tall, then do a picture from the side 🙂

Thanks for nic words, we have Ultimaker 2 in the office, and were not impressed at all especially at the price point 🙂

Okay here's how the cylinder turned out. It's pretty damn symmetrical, so I don't think it's an issue in the X or Y. But there are still relatively pronounced Z bands. (Oh and ignore the jagged edge on the bottom, it's from where I removed the brim.)

Re: Z-Banding?

Yup, this is not z wobble, this is actually non linear movement of the Z axis I think, so it makes some layers thinner -> wider and vice versa. Ill try to find out what is causing it.

Hmmm okay. I'm thinking it may be the flexible threaded rod or the z bearings. Let me know!

Re: Z-Banding?

First step is to see if the issue is in the printer or in the slicer.

Does this happen on the pre-bundled models? If no, then you have slicer issues, not printer hardware issues.

If slicer issues. Check settings around parameters first or last. Speed. Temperature.

If hardware. Calibrate extruder (search this forum). Check for loose fittings in extruder.

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…
