worth printing printer parts in PLA?
Hello...
Im trying to use up my PLA spool and get experience with the printer...Mostly as i dont have particular jobs yet i figured i would printer Prusa I3 plus printer parts.
These would be things like extra spool holders, y-axis bases, z-axis top holders, things i could need if i accidentally bumped the machine.
Was wondering if its worth doing this in PLA. Theres many claims online about moisture and degradation of PLA parts and i get it that its organic and moisture plus pressure plus organics = degradation. So i would be better off just perfecting my craft and eventually getting over to abs printing rather than printing structural part in pla?

Almost all the printer parts can be printed in PLA, but the question is whether its a good use of the filament.
Personally, I would have a look on thingiverse and find a nice vase or ornament I could print; at least it would have some immediate use!

Peter is right. Have you tried printing the vase on the SD card that came with the printer, wonderful print! My wife was impressed.
You get to learn the materials to print with, spare parts for the Prusa I3 should be printed with ABS.
The main thing have fun with your first reel of PLA. Lots of objects to print on thingiverse. I'm currently printing an Ipad Mini stand for my wife right now. An 8 hour print.

Not so. See Josef's post here: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/print-tips-slic3r-settings-kisslicer-model-repair--f12/replacement-parts-t521.html#p3705

Peter,
The cover all, would maybe as I said. Print spare parts with ABS. What does Joseph Prusa provide as standard with the kit?
Bare in mind PLA is a vegetable based filament that bio-degrades over time, and exposure and low glass point. You do not want the printer to fold away and lose calibration on a hot day of high humidity and the printer after a year or so folding in on itself 🙂

Re: worth printing printer parts in PLA?
Weather is usually pretty mild here in california. I was just printing a few replacement spool holders as i pull them apart when loading the spool so maybe might ruin them one day, good to have a spare. I was worried i would end up with a garage full of printed stuff without self control + thingiverse 😀 . So trying to make it a point to TRY to print stuff i need and CAD up myself...but u never know when a random skull will make it in the list.
I was thinking to use the prusa i3 models just to test the bed after my calibration issues....slowly print models using up a large area of the bed like the spool holders and then something that does a large part of the bed and also relatively tall (skull?) ...then if successful i can rest easy that build is accomplished! yay

@ george.a
You had bed calibration issues too? A common theme here.I have solved them. Others may not have the knowledge. About time this issue was solved. As a new purchaser of a genuine Prusa I3 kit. Others maybe suffering. When solved us users of the genuine Prusa I3 would like the upgrade. Please.
