Thermal Runaway error
Hi, just experienced this problem that I though was due to a loosening thermistor connector.
I can say that the 100% speed fan is instead the reason, since the temp of the heater block is going down from 210 to 194 degrees after few minutes of printing. It is switched on on the 2nd layer of printing by the slicer setting of simplify3d (maximum speed).
Is it an expected behaviour? Lowering the fan speed in live tuning resolves the issue.
I read here that the fan shred may be damaged (wrong assembly?), but everything seems correct. I'll add a picture soon

I fixed this by insulating the hotend with fiberglass insulation and kapton tape.

I don't understand if i can apply it to my prusa mk2 (just buy those and it's ok) or i need to update the whole block?

I think the mk2 is using the new heater block so you should be able to just buy those and slip in on.

If you're MK2 is recent it should have the new block. I know my MK2 and my MK2 upgrade both had the old style block.

Sorry.. Did you say that you have a MK2 and MK2 upgrade BOTH with the old style block? Aren't all the MK2 the same? I'm getting confused.. 😮
I received my one 2 weeks ago, what are the differences between the old and new block?

Cool, thank you. I've order the "socks" but i read they are quite flooded by orders for those (at least on e3d-online uk)
I'll let you know if that solved definitely the problem. I've also noticed that I may over tighten the fan shroud, so that the flow may be partially towards the heating element and less towards the extruded plastic. That may also help, since i've noticed some problems with the overhangs

That is the correct model heater block so you should be good to go.

Just installed!
I had to take off the front fan and loosening a bit the bolts, untie the zip that were holding the termistor cabling, but in 5 minutes I verified that the temperature was stable at 220 degrees with the fan full on!

I have the same problem than printing. First layer temp without cooling is jumping between 198-218. I set first layer temp to 215 and others to 210. On a second layer printer sets fan speed to 100%. Temperature is going down below 190 very quickly and this error is occurs.
So if manually turn the fan speed on a second layer to 0 and step by step increase it to maximum the temperature sets to 210 and printer keeps it till the end of the printing. No jumping. Fan and other parts are assembled correctly.
So I think this is a 100% software problem.
I tried Cura, S3D and slic3r-results Are the same-Thermal runaway.
Today I uploaded the new firmware. Error is not fixed there.
Dear firmware developers, if it might help I may shoot the video of how this error is appears.
I have the latest MK2 Printer for reference.

This is not a printer firmware error; the firmware is behaving as it is designed. It thinks there is something wrong due to overcooling of the nozzle.
Use a lower fan speed setting at lower layers. Personally I don't turn the fan on until the 4th layer when printing at 0.2mm.
Get some of those socks from the previous post or insulate the heat block with kapton tape and/or glass cloth..

Good evening!
Before Original Prusa I had a Chenese prusa clon and put there a cooler from server. The flow from this cooler was in times bigger than from this one and it starts to work on 100% on a second layer and there was no temperature jumps. No socs, no capton tape and other stuff.
My feeling that firmware should recognize that cooling is switched on (or will start is a nearest time) and should heat the heat sink faster than on 1-st layer prinnting.

Your Chinese clone probably had a 40W+ heater cartridge (mine was 50W). Generally speaking, the higher the heater power the less controllable they are. And if heaters are difficult to control, they become fire hazards.
Your choice, I guess.

Im in the UK but buying an E3d sock will not solve your problems. You need to be very careful thinking about buying the socks as they may or may not even fit. People suggesting the socks also need to be very careful here or could find themselves in a bit of bother!
The MK2 printer was sold with the "NEW" E3d V6 hotend. E3d thought it would be clever to change the thermister within a month or so of supplying Prusa and so even if your MK2 is a month old it may still have the old thermister. It seems those suggesting you buy the socks are not thinking properly, you may not have the right thermister so the sock may not even fit!! It takes the poster to realise that it may fit and ask the question, not the person suggesting the sock!

Dont spend your money on something just because it is "blue" you cannot see it when its on, it may not even fit! and it wears down quickly, there is a reason you get 3 in a pack 😮
Even with the right block you could come back and fit lots of spaghetti because the sock has moved just slightly!
Buy a reel of Kapton tape and your have a supply for life 😉
Also a good way to get people to buy a new block and thermister just for a £3 item. E3d have seen the word MUG

I had understood this to mean that he has the latest Mk2 printer, so he does have the updated V6. According to E3D, they have been shipping the upgraded V6 since mid-June and therefore Prusa will have been shipping printers with the updated nozzle for at least 2 months and the Mk2 only started shipping 3 months ago.
Given all the above and despite your own experience, I do think your comments a a little harsh, especially as I had also included the kapton and glass cloths as alternatives.
FWIW, I had kapton tape on my first printer (the Chinese clone) and it was a real PITA, deciding to come loose every now and again, with the end dangling down and interfering with the nozzle/print. That is the reason why I would prefer a custom-designed sock over the tape.
