Rusting threaded rods, nuts and washers
Hi all
I dont know if this is the right place to post this but I am writing this post just to let you know to take care of your printers and to make sure that they are in a safe place from environmental attacks as I disassembled my printer to upgrade to MK2 and when I took a look at the threaded rods I noticed it was an orange/copper color I thought nothing off it and thought it was just from the lcd screen or the piece that holds the belt so I got a brush to clean it off and it wasnt coming off so I finished disassembling it and also noticed that the nuts and washers also had some orange/copper stuff on it then i realized it was rust.
I am from Ireland so the weather here is a not great but I had the printer on the floor and away from the windows so I am unsure as to why it rusted and I only received the printer in May. So anyways I went online to look for ways of cleaning it and as mentioned by one of the staff they said to use baking soda so I looked at tutorials and you make it into a paste so I tried that and it didnt work for me and when I tried to clean it bits of baking soda paste was stuck everywhere and i cant remove it.
So today ill be going to the hardware shop to see what they say will help once I clear up the rust I will comment here of my results but at the moment it looks like ill be getting replacements for the threaded rods nuts and washers.
Here are a couple of pictures:
Re: Rusting threaded rods, nuts and washers
Hi James
That looks surprisingly bad!
All this type of hardware can be purchased from hardware stores, but most of what you buy will not be coated/painted and will rust a lot quicker that the bits supplied with the printer.
What you have is bad surface rust that I would only expect to see in such a short time if the printer had been left in salty water (do you live near the coast?).
You can get rust treatments from motor stores; that may be a better solution. As I said, it is only surface rust and will not affect the operation of the printer.
