Rambo restarting

Hello,
Recently my printer has started rebooting (thus stopping) a few minutes into a print.
I've disconnected OctoPrint (which i initially suspected). I've started printing directly from the SD card, and after a few minutes the screen refreshes, the extruder fan stops briefly, and the target temperatures are set to 0, so the printer starts to cool.

The green LED stays on the Rambo board, and all power connectors look ok.
The red fan LED stops briefly in time with the fan.
It looks like the board is restarting. Is there anyway to get a log out of the rambo board to see what it thinks is going on?
Any other suggestions.

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Rambo restarting

Hello Andrew,
which version of firmware you are using - have you upgraded to new version recently ?

Re: Rambo restarting

Hi Andrew

There have been issues in the past regarding the washers under the screws holding the heated bed in place cutting into the bed and causing a short which in turn causes a RAMBo reboot.

I suspect that this may be the cause of your problem, although it could well be something else.

Those washers have been pressed out and can have a sharp edge on one side. If that side is placed downwards it can cut through the lacquer on the board. Ensure that sharp edges are pointed upwards or use nylon washers under them (or insulation tape).

In this case I would suspect the intermittent nature of the problem to be caused by the printing process occasionally putting pressure on the bed/washers.

Peter

P.S. If you try printing one of the provided SD card GCode files and you still have the problem then that will rule out a possible GCode issue.

Andrew,

To expand a little more on Peter's suggestion I would also check the cabling from the heatbed. I know I had an issue where the cable had been rubbing on one of the nuts at the back of the bed. It wore through the cable and started shorting out and causing the same problems you are experiencing.

Thanks all.
I upgraded the FW in december to v2.2.0. I have tried printing with the supplied marvin gcode and had the same issue again.

The heat bed has actually been disconnected during all tests. An issue i had prior to this one was that the heat bed would cut out . I found that this was due to the terminal block for the heat bed was melting, i disconnected it weeks ago and have been printing on a cold bed since. For the test on the marvin gcode i artificially heated up the thermistor by blowing a hairdryer on it.

Do you think it's worth trying to upgrade the FW to some of the latest that have been released? Or do i risk bricking the rambo?

Andrew

There would be no harm in upgrading to 2.2.4, but I don't think it will fix your problem which does sound like it's hardware related.

Personally, I think you have an issue with the heater and/or heater connectors and the simple fix would be to solder the heater cables to the underside of the RAMBo - this is something that has worked for other users.

In your case, I also think it may be worthwhile attempting to desolder the heater connector terminals from the RAMBo as if they have melted, there is a possibility of a short there.

Of course, there is an option of purchasing a new RAMBo, but I really don't think that is necessary at the moment; you do need to try other things.

In view of your recent post, I will have a further think and if anything comes to mind, I will let you know.

Re: Rambo restarting

Successfully upgraded to v3.0.0, but still had resets.
Some connector was loose on the rambo, which was causing regular restarts. Can't be sure, but i think it was the LCD connectors. I've reseated all connectors now except the head bed, and the printer is going again, no resets yet.

Re: Rambo restarting

Humm 3.0.0 is a tad faulty, hence the release of 3.0.1 over the last weekend.

Although I am running 3.0.1, I am always wary of new builds, hence my advice to stick with 2.2.4...

Good that you have (hopefully) resolved the restarts. Could have been the LCD cable/connector as there is a reset line there.

Let us know how you get on with the firmware.

I recently purchased a pre-assemble, calibrated printer, when I tried the 'Preheat' command, the printer looks like it shorts out, and restarts, i was instructed by customer service to check all the connections to RAMBo which appear tight (i disconnected and reconnected one by one) yet the printer keeps restarting when i try the pre-heat command.

i reached out to customer service a week a go and no answer, customer service chat told me to wait their response, any advice?

attached is a video link

David

Do you have 120V or 240V mains supply? Check the PSU setting matches with your mains.

There are a couple of other things which can cause this, but check that first.
