PLA Warping

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but....

I have noticed that large models that fill the bed are warping. I have only beed using PLA and the bed set to 55º through out the entire print, the hotend is set to 205º. I've seen this problem with ABS but never with PLA. The model is sticking to the bed and the first layer looks good but is most likely a little to low which as I understand should really make the first layer stick.

So I'm a little stumped. I have tried to experiment with the setting but I'm now running low on filament, should I lower the bed temp or increase it or just turn it off?

Re: PLA Warping

I have the same problem.

How thick is your print?

I found that thin prints covering most of the print bed may stick to the bed nicely, but once they are removed, they warp immediately and severely.

I wonder if annealing might help, as in: When the printing has finished, increase the bed temp to very high and leave it alone for several hours, then very gradually reduce the temperature to room temperature.

Re: PLA Warping

I found very early on that on the Mk2, I need to bed temp set to 60 degrees for smaller objects and 65 degrees for larger ones.

Yesterday I printed a model 230 x 180mm with the bed at 65 and with no lifting or other issues.

PLA has a glass transition temp of around 63 degrees, so going above that is not ideal, but with having only 1 bed thermistor and that being on the underside of the bed, for me a bed temp reading of 65 degrees is about as far as I need to go.

Try 60 to 65 deg C as Peter says on the heated bed. I also swear by rafts, I use then a lot across many of my prints. Especially if using from bed up supports. And larger prints generally. However I have had one or two rafts lift, but overall good for me.

Don't you have an option in your slicer to use rafts only for support? If not, you should have a good look at KISS... 😉

Re: PLA Warping

So I was using the Window Cleaning Spray and a microfibre cloth to clean the bed which worked ok. I have since managed to source a bottle of IPA. Although I haven't printed a large model but the models I have printed definitely stick better to the bed.

Also the tips about increasing the temperature is a good one and I will looking in to this further when I load up another large model. I couldn't use a raft as the model was too big. But I do use them on smaller models with a smaller contact area with the bed and they work great.

Re: PLA Warping

Just wanting to know if you guys found any secrets or had an update on this. I'm printing from a MK3 and doing a tall-ish print (around 70mm tall) with a SUBSTANTIAL base. I made sure my first layer is sticking ultra well. I've even used a gluestick for this specific print, but still suffer from warping. I'm going to try to heat the bed up around 60-65 as recommended, but wanted to know if you had an update on this post. Thank you!

Re: PLA Warping

To prevent warping:
1) Higher bed temp as discussed above
2) Very clean bed - use acetone - don't use glue - Clean PEI is better for PLA
3) Very good "Live Z" setting to get good adhesion
4) if a solid object, Keep infill < 75%. at 100% it will make warpage much worse. If it is a box, the walls can be higher.
5) If problem persists, add Brim.

Re: PLA Warping

The very, very best adhesion technique I have used so far ... (on an Ultimaker 3D printer) is a silly easy one.

Take a glass of water and add a spoon of salt.

Take a tissue, dip in the water and go over the bed. Give time to evaporate.
A very tin layer of salt is on the bed.

The print sticks as rock on the bed, but once cooled down, it comes off very very easily.

It worked perfectly on a glass bed, but I don't dare to try it on a metal bed.
