I have to adjust z height every time I start a new print

Ok, I am exclusively using Slic3r and PETG to print my models.

I first calibrated the printer using the included PLA and everything looked fine.

I then loaded my PETG filament, had to back off the Z live adjust to -0.045 from -0.350 for pla.

It printed perfectly. I removed the object from the print bed and when i attempted to print a duplicate model, the filament was way too high, i had to live z adjust down to -0.400 for it to stick like before..

This seems wrong. I checked the probe, everything is good there.

Do i have to calibrate Z every time before a print? I thought it did that mesh bed level thing before printing every time??

How can i fix this?

ALSO id love to run the V2Calibration gcode with my PETG filament, but its hard coded to print at a much lower temp (obviously for PLA) so thats a no go.

I was told online that live z adjust can be done with ANY STL and it will save.

Below is the V2 Calibration gcode. I'll leave it as an exercise for you to spot where to change the temperatures 😉

Same problem here, after tweaking zindex with petg.. The printer started saying that was not calibrated

I flashed the latest 3.09 firmware and re-calibrated (hopefully it stays).

The issue i have now is that my PETG wont stick to the bed. My Live Z offset is -0.470 and if i go any lower it will start to get wiggly on the bed and curl up behind the nozzle.

PETG likes to be barely smooshed when laid down, im wondering if i should sand the pei surface? I tried cleaning it with rubbing alcohol, but i still see streaks on the bed after it dries?

Im about ready to put some painters tape on the bed..

Some have suggested a light coating of the included glue stick will help with PETG. I used to use glue stick on painters tape with my other printer for PETG, and it worked well, so I would start with gluestick on the MK42 bed first. It cleans up very easily with a damp cloth.

I actually tried with the gluestick and had bad results directly on the PEI. IT was difficult to remove as well. It kept ripping my wet paper towel when scrubbing it off.

My last printer was glass bed so it was much easier to clean.

I will attempt the painters tape when i get off of work. I'll update with my results.

Yeah, you would be better off with a cloth towel to remove the glue. I can see the paper towel would disintegrate and stick to everything.

I wear glasses, and every time I get a new pair, or visit the optician, they give me a lint-free cloth. I have about 10 of them, and found that one of those works great, both for cleaning glue from the bed (just moisten it with a little warm water) and a different cloth to quickly wipe the PEI bed with alcohol before each new print.

Good Luck!

If you use painters tape you will need to redo your z-offset.
