Huge blobs forming on print
Hello
I am new to 3d printing and have recently purchased the Prusa i3 Mk2 with the upgrade kit. over the past week i had numerous issues such as nozzle blocking and issues with the first layer sticking. After much research i have ironed out most my issues but i am stuck on this one!
My exruder seems to be releasing large amounts of filament randomly? I think its random or at least it is when it starts a new layer but only sometimes?? I have attached a few pictures to show you the issue at hand
Software - Slic3r Prusa Edition
Filament - PLA received from Prusa
Ill show you the settings i have played around with so far.
1st attempt
Started with Everything Standard
2nd attempt
Retraction length 1.2mm
Extrude Temp 205
Extrusion multiplier 0.9
Speed for non print moves 150
2nd attempt
Retraction length 1.5mm
Extrude Temp 205
Extrusion multiplier 0.9
Speed for non print moves 150
3rd attempt
Retraction length 2mm
Extrude temp 210
Extrusion multiplier 1
Speed for non print moves 200
Extruder ended getting clogged on attempt 3
Re: Huge blobs forming on print
Are you having these issue when you try and print the supplied models on the SD card? Have you adjusting your live-z setting?

Hi James
the dragon was supplied on the SD card. And yes i did adjust the Live Z its at negative 500. I printed the whistle and batmat logo aswell and those didnt seem to suffer from the same issue. But they are much simpler and smaller objects without much non print travel time.
Re: Huge blobs forming on print
Have you PID tuned the hot end and calibrated the extruder steps? Just trying to think of other things that might intermittently cause problems with the supplied models.
Re: Huge blobs forming on print
leaking from extruder nozzle maybe? there are some pretty huge blobs.

Re: Huge blobs forming on print
that's the first thing that came into my mind as well: leaking nozzle or heatbreak. maybe the parts (heater bock, heatbreak and nozzle) haven't been assembled in hot state (@ about 275° C)... or they've been assembled in the wrong way.

Re: Huge blobs forming on print
Thanks it was the nozzle being loose. I fixed it but now I am getting a weird noise. Listen
Re: Huge blobs forming on print
Hi All, Not sure if this post is still active but I had a similar issue yesterday (very new to this 2nd day).
Anyway, my first print came off amazing. I was very happy with the results. The next day, I came home from work eager to try my second print. When it started I noticed a very loud buzzing from the extruder. Like a nut rattling or like two bees fighting. The extruder also made a "suck" noise from time to time. I searched blogs/forums to find an answer but nothing worked - loosen this screw, tighten this screw nothing. I could not unload, the filament would not come out unless i applied a lot of force.
One post said that after a long build the buzzing went way so I tried that. I came back to the print an hour later and the noise was completely gone. But when I looked at my model, I noticed that it was not actually building. there was nothing coming out of the extruder.
My issue, and possibly, yours was that the spool holders were too tight, the spool was not spinning freely (not at all in my case) the buzzing was the extruder trying to force filament into its self, the sound was the filament slipping.
easy novice mistake... I hope you agree 😀
Hope this helps someone else.

Re: Huge blobs forming on print
Not shure if this has to do something with your problem but , are you Printing on the "DONT PRINT ON THIS SURFACE" Heatbed?
So Maybe if you do so, the auto bed leveling is not working propperly and it affect your print... just thinking
RE: Huge blobs forming on print
If you have a magnetic heat bed and a smooth or pei coated steel sheet, use those while printing. Also, try unloading and cutting an angle in your filament on the spool. Then reload it. Also, make sure you are using the standard heat bed temp for PLA (60deg. C) and the standard extruded temp for PLA (215deg. C)
RE: Huge blobs forming on print
the latest pictures feature a mk2 printer with a mk42 heatbed which has pei glued to the heatbed, there is no scope for a build plate in this instance!
