Heat shrink
I've just finished building my new i3 - my first 3d printer. The build went well. I had a few issues: I didn't realise that the stepper motors where different so I had to fit the first one twice. A few of the steps wheren't clear until I read the comments section. I had to re-do a few tie wraps on the Y carriage as they hit the vertical frame. But all in all, fairly straightforward. First print is currently in progress - no idea what it is - I randomly chose one of the samples from the SD card!
My question is about the heat shrink that covers the junction of the X motors - it doesn't say anywhere that we need to heat this up to make it fit tightly around the junctions, but presumably we do have to do this?

I built mine last evening and I too was wondering the same. Having looked at the pictures in the manual, there's not really a clue to this. I haven't shrunk mine as yet, if you do chose to do this, then be aware that the printed parts start to melt a temperatures lower than the shrink temp...

I've shrunk the heat shrink on mine and it seems to have added some rigidity to the join between the 2 rods so the movement is now a little smoother.
I just covered all the plastic parts in Aluminium foil to protect against the heat from my heat gun and then applied heat for as little time as possible. The plastic parts werent even warm when I removed the foil.

Having now built my printer, I would be inclined to not do the shrinking until at least a week after the build completion, just in case it all has to come apart again (due to a build error...)

There is no heatshrink on the X motors 😯
Do you mean the heatshrink covering the connection of the Z axis motors and M5 threaded rod?

That's what I had read into it and was referring to (Z motor connectors).

Yes, my mistake, I did indeed mean the two Z axis motor couplings.
