Filament 'run out' doesn't retract

Inspired by the Mk3's filament 'run out' sensor, I've been using up all my near-empty spools of filament. So far it detects the end of the filament and stops the print nicely, but the filament ends up below the drive gear so it can't 'unload'. Every time so far I have to unscrew the tensioner screws and open the door on the side of the extruder, and reach in with needle nose pliers to pull the filament up and out of the hot end. Then I can close up the extruder and load filament and resume the print. And the prints resume fine.

So the problem appears to be just that the filament feeds a little too far past the sensor before stopping. I'm printing at about 100 mm/s or less, so the filament isn't moving terribly fast on the way into the extruder.

This has been with RC4 firmware. I just upgraded to RC5, but I've not run out of filament since then.

Does this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions? I don't see any configuration options to try tweaking.

Re: Filament 'run out' doesn't retract

So am I the only one having trouble unloading the left-over filament when a spool runs out on the Mk3? Am I doing something wrong? When my spool runs out, can't load more filament or unload the last of the old filament...

I've never tried running out of filament, but check in the menu that your filament sensor is actually enabled...

Re: Filament 'run out' doesn't retract

hi, I had this issue on RC4,
also had false triggering on transparent green PETG and opaque lack TPU on both RC4 and RC5

but so far, no filament out over run's on RC5...
but not tried it often.

The sensor is enabled, and it is detecting when the filament runs out, and is properly stopping printing. The issue is just that when it stops, the end of the filament is below the gears, so the filament in the extruder cannot be retracted.

Have you raised this as an issue in Chat!?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am having this same issue. Did you get this resolved?
