Advice on vertical artifact

All,

Got my printer assembled over the weekend and have really been enjoying it. It prints great and I'm pretty happy with the results of most of my prints.

One thing i have not been able to tune or solve...I'm getting very regular vertical artifacts along the edges of large rectangular prints. Prints with rounded sides don't seem to display this.

My first thought is it might be extrusion related so I re-measured my tensioner bolt springs and they were indeed a bit too compressed (according to the manual).

I"m testing a print now with them loosened, but thought I'd post here in case anyone else has seen this. It's been a doozy to find anything resembling this online...there's on thread here that shows something similar, but not quite what I'm seeing, and much more pronounced with no solution.

Anyway, some shots attached.

Thanks!

Dave

Re: Advice on vertical artifact

Thanks, had read through that one already but no solution.

I did some more research and found that this is called the corduroy effect. It is indeed due to resonance.

I did isolate the issue on mine:

Tried the print with Slic3r (was using Simplify3D), and the effect was almost completely eliminated. I noticed Slic3r is set by default to do 20mm perimeters at .1 mm resolution...the default Simplify3D profile is set to 80% of 40mm/s (so 32mm/s). Wondering if it hits a resonant frequency around 30mm/s...

I set Simplify3D to do perimeters at 50% (which works out to 20mm/s) and am printing the model again. This should determine that 32mm/s is a speed to avoid for perimeters (at least on my printer).

@david.b32: can you check if the problem persists in both operation modes of our i3/MK2 ([silent mode]/[high-power]) ?
do you notice these vertical lines at all the sides ? or only at sides in y or x direction ?

because these vertical lines are very tiny, it might be that it's related to the microstepping of the motors... which only works properly if the stepper currents are in a specific range.

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I've tried in high power mode with the same artifacts. I think though that lowering my perimeter speed and loosening my x-axis idler screws has solved the issue. I think I had them too tight and was getting resonance as a result.

Re: Advice on vertical artifact

I have a new MK2S and suffer from the same problem. The effect is only present with Y axis movement. So if I print a square box, the problem only shows up on the Y axis.
I've tried tightening/loosening the belt to no avail. The other thing I notice is that the Y axis stepper motor is much louder than the X axis motor. Is this normal?
It does appear like some sort of resonance.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Advice on vertical artifact

I've had luck almost completely eliminating the effect by printing the outer perimeter around 20mm/s instead of the 30mm/s range.
