Zits on print surface

Over the weekend I spent time trying to understand why my 0.2mm layer height prints were covered with small blobs/zits. I'm using the 0.20mm NORMAL print settings (Seam position set to Random), modified Prusa PLA 1.75mm filament settings (200C extruder temp), and the Original Prusa i3 MK2 with ZHop Printer settings.

This is a 0.20mm layer height issue as the printer does not have a problem with blobs/zits when printing at 0.05 or 0.10mm layer height.

I spent a lot of time tweaking the extruder retraction settings but was not able to remove the blobs/zits. I finally fixed the problem when I checked the "External perimeters first" checkbox on the Layers and perimeters Print Settings page.

If you are having problems with surface blobs/zits, give "External perimeters first" a try.

Re: Zits on print surface

Interesting. I've been having a similar issue and although I was able to minimize it some with retraction and coasting settings in S3D, it never went away completely. I'll try doing the perimeters outside-in. If this really does have an impact, I imagine it's because the extra plastic at the end has two places to go instead of just one on the first perimeter. If so, then why isn't that the default? Does anyone know if there is there any downside to processing the external perimeter first?

Overhangs are the reason you print perimeters from the inside.

You can only print from the outside with some models, but the main benefit in doing so is more accurately sized models.

Ah yes, of course. Seems obvious now that you say it out loud. 🙂
