To raft or not to raft.. that is the question

This looks cool. They say print with a raft. Why? It looks to have pretty good contact with the bed?
How much raft do you folks usually use? Like 1 layer, 5 mm around?
Re: To raft or not to raft.. that is the question
99.99% of my prints work without a raft. Theres some very rare occasions, like when printing round and longish knitting needles for the wife or similar stuff wheres just not enough bed contact.. My guess would be apart from increasing adhesion they recommend a raft here to try to avoid fusing the bottom parts together by whats called an "Elephant foot" - which develops for example when your first layer is squished into your bed too much or because of too high bed / print temperatures..
I must admit even though this is one of the showcase prints everyone seems to print to show off the printer, i never tried it it myself. So take my words with a truckload of salt 😉
I'd print it without a raft. Rafts are sooo old fashioned 😉
