Slic3r 0.35mm FAST profile

Can anyone actually print large objects using the 0.35mm fast profile? My extruder slips, it cant keep up. Ive been recalibrating my Z offset, checked extruder for dirt and adjusted idler tension, but all to no avail; I had to reduce layer height to .3mm and speeds to ~40mm/s to get a decent print. Admittedly, Im printing Petg right now (@230C), which may be factor? Ill try with PLA later

I just did the math. In this profile, for infill, extrusion width is set to 0.7mm x 0.35mm layer height x 60mm/s infill speed = 14.7 mm³ /s. No wonder it cant keep up. The V6 reportedly tops out around 10mm³/s

From memory, I think the actual figure was 11.4 mm^3 when printing a type of ABS at slightly increased temperature. But I have previously mentioned the 10mm^3 on a few occasions, just to be on the safe side.

Personally, I limit the maximum layer height to 80% (or even 75%) of the nozzle diameter. There's less control over the flow the higher you go and quality/accuracy really does suffer.

Higher layers = slower printing.

Conversely, when you get down to 75 (or 50) micron layer heights, you have to print rather fast to maintain as constant a pressure as possible within the nozzle (and especially with the MMU with 140 steps/mm).

Print quality didnt really matter for this print, as its a mold support (outside is just a box, inside will be filled with silicone). But its big, I thought Id use the "fast" profile, but those settings just dont work.

Anyway, since Im often doing large prints that dont really require high quality, Im looking in to a Volcano upgrade. .4mm nozzles also exist for that, in case I want to do fine prints, so I wonder if there is any downside to it compared to the V6 (aside from a small loss in height, and probably some issues mounting it) ?

If you order the volcano, you may want to specify the 40W heater (it comes with 30W as standard, the PR V6 comes with 40W)

The only issue you may find would be probe position - getting it low enough - you may have to redesign the holder, but I am not certain about this.

With the longer melt zone and 0.8mm nozzle, you will be able to print 0.6mm layers quite fast.

Re: Slic3r 0.35mm FAST profile

I'm part of a thread that is tackling Volcano install and we ran into (literally) an issue with firmware limitations. The idea was to stay stock as possible and go from there, pretty standard operating modding. But XYZ cal is where things go south as it seems to rely completely on manual z-stop definition (grinding noise are Z hits physical top) and an arbitrary and hard-coded value for what I assume Prusa considered "safe" height from heatbed to start XYZ calibration routine. Unfortunately Bob, the 8.5mm difference from standard V6 hotend for the Volcano is not within the hard-coded value. Another forum member is investigating changing this presumed to exist safe Z-value to recompile firmware but I really think XYZ cal should include PINDA home like Z cal. OK, if this was in firmware, you would have never found out your printer was borked, but hey, you would have never known and it would have just worked anyway, for better or worse. But yeah, heads up and join us on Improvements thread on this so we can all print big bore. Because waiting a whole day for a power drill holster is just too long.
