Same artefacts different prints

Hi
I need some help with finding the issue my prints have.
First of, the prints on SD- card where near perfect. So i was very pleased, knowing that i had a 'selfmade' replica prusa 3d printer, when i was a student. It had ups and downs, but much more downs 😉 Now that i am somewhat working a safed up some money and i made the jump to the real prusa.

So after the sd-card prints, i switched to things i wanted to print for a long time. You'll probably recognize some things. 🙂

But i had some issues. First i thought it is because of the model.
But then i used a more simple object and it had the same issues.
Is there someone that had the same experience and knows what the issue is? And what steps i can take in preventing them.
Photo's will clarify 'the issue'.

Thanks!!!!

Bart.w2,

You have a slicer settings issue. Your issues seems to be on overhangs.

0) It might be a combination of your slicer settings (most likely) in particular speed and temperature. If you post your settings we can see if anything looks out of wack. Since you say the pre-sliced files look good, and your sliced files don't, I suspect a slicer setting.

1) If your cooling fan (the one that cools the filament after it comes out of the nozzle - the pancake fan on the front) is critical to overhangs. It blows through the !HOT! redirect to cool the filament. It looks like your filament is not being cooled, so it is still flowing and creating those artifacts. Make sure that fan is running and is un-obstructed.

2) If that fan is running, and overhangs to the FRONT of the machine are fine, but you see this artifact on overhangs to the BACK of the machine, it might be because you only have cooling coming from the front. I have had good success with this upgrade:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2276997
which replaces the !HOT! funnel and gets you more even cooling from the sides.

Let us know if this points you toward something.

It is also possible that the particular models you are printing are difficult, and require special treatment - supports, speeds, etc.

My suggestion is to first slice - for yourself - the Benchy, which test all of the difficult things your printer can do.

If it prints fine, then you can try the more advanced things.

So i'll try a presliced benchy from card and a self sliced benchy to see the differents.

I already changed some settings in the cooling department for better cooling, on smaller layers.

When i print that replacement from thingiverse for cooling, i shouldn't use PLA for it i guess? Cause of the heat, but is PETG filament good enough, or should it be ABS?

I'll try all the things an keep you up-to-date.

Thank you!!!!

Interestingly, the fan funnel can be done in PLA (mine is, and Jeff has too).

Comparing the Benchy will be very instructive.

So i did the benchy test, but having trouble to shoot a clear picture with the light. From left to right. Benchy sliced by prusa on sd card. Selfsliced in pusaslicer with standard settings. 3rd one, improved fan settings in slicer.
But there isnt a great difference between all 3.

Benchy is ok, not perfectely smooth. but that is not the issue i had.

I printed the fan tunnel, but didnt used it. I am not to sure i should use pla that close to hotend.

Re: Same artefacts different prints

So the Benchy's show the printer handles overhangs just fine. That front bow is a great example.

So your prints in your original post did not seem to handle the overhangs well. Is it possible that they were at too great an angle for the printer, and would require supports? It is very hard to see from your photos what the models are, but if the slope is more than about 45degs, the printer can't print to "air" and you get those types of ripples as the filament sags before it cools. The solution is to print with supports.

Does that make sense?
