Removing a stuck model

I had problems getting a PLA model off the print bed. Was a big surface area, and only about 5 mm thick, so nothing to hang on to. Even a sharp blade under a corner needed a lot of force to unstick it. Tried tapping etc, but nothing seemed very effective.
Found a solution:
Spray one corner with one of the electronic 'spray freeze' materials. See the white ice formation in the photo. The shock cooling unsticks the corner, and then the model lifts off really easily.
Occurs to me that cold water might work too, but havent tried it yet.

Freezing the print? That's something I never thought of! Just got the printer and found it incredibly difficult to remove prints. I managed to crack the little top off of the eiffel tower I printed and break the wall of the fan spool I printed even being extremely careful ;-( I'll give this a try, and if this doesn't work, I'll just go the way of punching it off the build plate like in the Matterhackers vid. 🙂

Re: Removing a stuck model

I find these two methods the best for print parts stuck in the bed:

1) When the bed still warm, I drop some amount of cold water, enough to surround the borders of the part. This usually make the print shrunk a little bit and pop off. Alcohol (IPA) sometimes do the job.

2) When the first does not work, I tap with a large plastic rule I have in the side and normally the part flies away. Sometimes just tap gently is enough, sometimes I tap hard.

I hope it helps.

Let the bed totally cool. I have never had issues with removing PLA prints when bed totally cooled down. My slicer works and lifts the print.

I use Printbite on another printer. My Ultimaker 2+ When the printer and bed cool PLA easily lifts and pops off.

Re: Removing a stuck model

➡ when you've found the optimal z-live adjustment level and regulary use acetone to clean the pei sheet, you can really get into a problem when you try to remove prints with a large contact surface at the printing bed. 😳

💡 to avoid damaging the print and/or the pei sheet while removing the part, you can prepare the object before slicing it.
personally i use autodesks 123D design and add some kind of "lift-latch" at a corner of the print (0.4mm height).

after everything is cooled down, you can lift the lift-latch a little bit with your fingernails (maybe you've to use cooling spray as mentioned above), then you can get under it with your recommended spatula (with "rounded edges", you rememeber 😉 ) and push the spatula gently between pei sheet and printed object to get it off the bed.
😀 😀

afterwards you can cut the lift latch off quite easy with a sharp knife.

btw. i've seen this idea the first time at david.t2's objects for the prusa i3 mk2-x mod for the rebelix frame design. and it works great. thank you david !

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

Late reply here, but I've found that warming the bed up just a bit (40-50C) and then using a medicine syringe filled with denatured alcohol to squirt some around the edges works very well.
