Prusa part x-carriage.stl corrupt?

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is a Slic3r issue or a part issue, but I'm trying to print a set of spares for my printer, and am having problems with x-carriage.stl. It display's incompletely, then crashes Slic3r while processing the file. I've tried the version off the website and off Github, which appear to be the same.

Has anyone else run into issues while trying to print this piece?

Thanks!
James

Looks like I was able to repair it by loading the .stl into Windows 10 3D builder. It asked if I wanted to fix it, and I saved the fixed version. Slic3r likes it much better now.

James,
I ran into this exact same problem. Can you post the repaired file?

The STL file is really corrupt. It is an ascii STL containing some "infinity" values, and depending on your locales (language settings of your operating system), Slic3r may not read it correctly. I implemented a workaround for this issue into Slic3r, it will be in the next release.

Hi Vojtech,
Workarounds are one answer. is it possible to re generate the STL without the corruption?

then it would work for everyone!

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Just edit the file with a text editor, find the infinities and replace them with zeros. The infinities are in the normal vectors of the triangles in this particular buggy stl. if set to zero, the normal vectors will be recalculated by slic3r.

Re: Prusa part x-carriage.stl corrupt?

that's curious. when i load the part in slic3r, i get the same problems.
in simplify3d everything seems to be ok.

furthermore it's quite interesting, that s3d mentions that the part was analyzed successfully, with 2730 triangles...

just noticed that i can even export the *.stl with s3d... and slic3r likes it now !

so for your convenience:

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

Yes, S3D is good at some repairs then export as a new STL.

Is there a way to use the SCAD files in Fusion 360 or is there another format? I wanted to tinker around with a couple of the parts in Fusion but doing so with the STL is a real pain!!
I am not up for learning OpenSCAD right now!

AFAIK, there is no direct way.

But you can use FreeCAD to convert it to a step file, which is way better to work on.

Have a look at that: https://forum.lulzbot.com/viewtopic.php?t=243

Brilliant! I may just be able to fiddle around with it in freeCAD also as a starting point. Thanks!!
