Prusa filament in the USA

I rather liked the filament my Prusa came with and wanted to order more. However, I'm in the US and the shipping pretty much doubles the cost of each roll; so I wondered if there was anywhere a more local I could buy the identical filament from?

Thanks

Re: Prusa filament in the USA

I don't know if anyone carries "Prusa" filament, but it seems likely that someone else makes filament from the same resin, as is common in much of the industry. Unfortunately, the PR website seems to only have the mechanical specifications of the material, and not the name of the resin, so I don't know exactly who's filament it is.

What do you like about it? Have you tried other filaments sourced locally? I am confident you'll find you can get equally good or better performance from locally sourced filaments. 🙂

PR's filament is made in the Czech Republic; I would guess that it is made by Filamentum: http://fillamentum.com/

@Omikron - I tried some eSun PLA which I bought for the same money in the US, but it is much worse than the Prusa stuff. Printing with the Prusa PLA my model has nice smooth sides (better than I expected) but with the eSun it is very rough and uneven. Of course there are many, many others to try, but if I could buy Prusa stuff I knew worked well, then I'd just get that.

If someone can get what type of resin Prusa's filament uses from PR support, that would be helpful. Not only can we find comaptible replacements, but it will be useful for creating slicer profiles that work well for different resin blends.

Thank you Peter, it does!

Looks like Ultimachine uses the same resin for their PLA: https://ultimachine.com/collections/pla

Interestingly, because they charge more for their filament, it's still cheaper to order one from Prusa despite the international shipping cost.

Re: Prusa filament in the USA

If I'm being honest, Natureworks 4043D is considered a entry-level or "cheap" grade of resin for PLA filament. Not that it's bad, since it clearly prints great, but I don't think you're missing out if you expand your horizon a bit.

If you're looking for cheap PLA, I would recommend some of the following distributors to start:

https://www.allprofessional3d.com/product-category/polylactic-acid/ (made right here in Philly!)
http://www.makergeeks.com/pla3dfilament.html
http://stacker3d.com/stacker-3d-printer-filament/#pla

I'm sure others here can chime in with their own recommendations.

All this to say, don't be afraid to experiment. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the results. 🙂
