Printing help required

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forums here. I purchased a pre-built Prusa i3 Plus in January. I'm kicking myself for not going the kit route as it would have been more fun to put it together. Though I have had to make a couple of adjustments to the end stops. I purchased it as an upgrade to my Da Vinci 1.0 from XYZ. It has been working great but I've noticed an issue with my prints. I'm not sure what is causing it. Here is my setup

Printer: Prusa i3 Plus
Software: Simplify3D
Material: ABS
Temp: 255
Bed Temp: 100

For Simplify3D, I am using the PLA settings published by Josef. However I changed the extruder and bed temps for ABS. I have also removed the setpoint for cooling. I do have an enclosure as well to maintain ambient temps. I don't know if this is because of under extrusion. Any help would be appreciated.

It only seems to happen where a top layer meets the exterior of another layer. Bottom layers always seem fine and top layers in general also seem fine. Other than this, the quality of my prints have been excellent.

Re: Printing help required

Hi and welcome to the forum

How many top layers are being printed? It seems like you need one or two more to give better support where the infill is not present.

Might be worthwhile trying a different slicer (or there may be settings in S3D to allow the last couple of layers of infill under the top layers at say 50%).

Can you share the G-code?

Thanks for the responses. PJR, I am printing with 3 top layers, 3 bottom layers, and 2 shells. I can definitely set up a second profile to print the top few layers with a higher infill. Josef, I've attached the gcode from generated by Simplify3D. I should mention this is not the only 3D object I've noticed this issue with. However on those models it was far less noticeable. I can also try a different slicer but am hoping to better understand why this is occurring. Thanks for your help.

Re: Printing help required

Hi

Had a quick look at the gcde and there is no higher density infill under the top layers so you go from this:

to this:

You will also note that there is nothing for the top layer to attach to at the point marked.

You could try dropping the temperature down to 240 degrees or less (some ABS will print OK at 210), but ideally you will need to get the slicer to create that higher density infill (I think KISSLicer includes 2 layers @ 50% to prevent issues like these), or get the slicer to generate a continuous line to which the filament can bond.

Thanks Peter. That makes a lot of sense and your rendering of the tool paths helps a lot. I will see if there is an option to increase infill density near the top layers or generate gcode base on multiple print profiles to compensate.

Re: Printing help required

If you want to upload the STL, I can slice it for you with KISS to see if it is any better. Just let me know your layer/temps/speeds.

Re: Printing help required

I have read a lot in the simplify forms about getting a good base layer and the different settings like the one with the overlap that you have with the edges. It is all over the board with what people are saying to do.
You can't take the same settings from slic3r and make it work in Simplify. Doesn't happen.

I just wanted to come back and post that increasing the infill to 30% and adding an additional top layer seems to have solved the printing issue. I guess it is similar to pillowing. Always good to know and learn.

Re: Printing help required

Good news. But with a decent slicer, you wouldn't have to waste filament on infill... 😉
