How is this possible?

I'm baffled by something, I started printing parts for a T-Rex that you can get on thingiverse here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:275091/#files

Looking at some of the parts, it is obvious to me that supports will be required, as some of the angles exceed 90 degrees, yet the publisher of the model claims no supports are required, and a few of the people who printed it and commented said they did not use any supports. How is this possible? I tried printing one part without supports that looked sketchy, and sure enough the printer was trying to print in thin air creating spaghetti. Unless these people are using an entirely different type of 3D printer, I can't see how you can print some of these parts without any support.

Re: How is this possible?

Yeah, I did that print as well, but at 175%

The ribs are the hardest part to print; use a large brim, lower speed and use Z-Lift.

He has a problem standing up in the sun...

And whether you choose to use supports is up to you.

Peter, you didn't use any supports for your print?

Here's a side image from the hip_top model, there's no way this could print properly without support, it's literally hanging downwards on a slant. If you can pull this off I'd love to know your slicer settings.

I'm printing mine at 160%, and already printed the ribs. Just one rib needs to be redone as the nozzle hit it and knocked it down, leaving me to stand there pulling out excess filament with pliers until that rib was finished so the dangling filament didn't hit the next rib to be printed. Good thing it was close to being finished when it happened I guess.

Beautiful clock tower btw.

Re: How is this possible?

Thanks. Clock tower has one working clock, 27W LED lighting and chimes.

Time to own up, I guess... When printing, I ignore what is said about how to print and make my own decisions. There were a few parts where I used supports, just to be on the safe side.

I'm all for people making their own decisions, I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on some nifty feature to print crazy angles without supports. Anything above 60 degrees and I'll slap a support on it, so I'll assume others claiming they printed it without supports are not totally fessing up or they print with magic filament.

Damian

I tend to make a judgement based on the model. The angles I use supports for can vary between 45 and 80 degrees.

I do agree with you; the model could be printed without supports, but it would probably be quite a mess.

Re: How is this possible?

Could it be that other people laid out the part differently on the bed? I have not printed this so I cannot speak to specific print but I will usually flip the part around until I find what I think is the optimum.

Eric

The models are downloaded in optimal orientation. There is very little movement possible.
