wrapping bed instead of wrapping print - possible issue?

I was thinking, wouldn't the new print bed design result in the whole bed deforming and coming lose mid-print ? Particularly with big prints and filaments known for heavy wrapping, like PC?

Do you mean warping?

Depends on many factors:

  • adhesion

  • lateral size of prints

  • amount of warping

  • strength of the magnets

  • resistance of the steel plate to flex
  • It really comes down to the magnet strength and position. If they are near the edge and pretty strong, they have a pretty good lever arm to work with for keeping the bed flat. I would think adhesion would fail before the bed would, but we'll see.

I would disagree, especially when talking for instance about PETG, which sticks to PEI like hell. 😉 But we'll see. 😎

    Hi Pavlo,

the Metal Sheet is held down by 25 magnets all of which seem to be quite strong, the sheet itself has a certain rigidity. so hopefully distortion of the upper build plate will be minimal. we have seen some quite large models on the videos. no mention was made of distortion at that time.

we have seen some evidence of marking on the Mk2 PEI Sheets where the periphery of large prints seems to cause partial delamination,

I suspect that Partial delamination will continue to be a possibility on the interim Bonded PEI sheet , however the Powder coated Steel sheets should overcome that issue.

in the past we have used such barbaric tools as chisels and scrapers, to prise models off the build plate, that should be a thing of the past, flexing the build plate to remove models looks, in the video's, to be a more gently removal process, so hopefully that may reduce potential damage to the PEI Sheets.
so I am hopeful that PEI damage will be minimised. however the proof will soon become available as users post on here and youtube.

    regards Joan

    Oops, warping indeed.

    Thanks for the provided feedback.
Judging by the image from assembly manual there are indeed plenty of magnets at the sides of the bed:

I cant realy tell you wether or not the magnets are stronger than warping... but i can tell you that the magnets are freaking strong and you realy have to watch your fingers when putting it on. now i finaly understand the fingerprint pictures on the head bed. you need to rest your fingers there to stabilize while putting in on and taking off 😀

I hear you: I've had some PETG actually stick to glass hard enough I pulled up chunks of glass getting it off. Right now, when doing PETG on PEI I use purple gluestick to weaken the grip.

However, I haven't had warping issues with PETG, at least not nearly as bad as I used to have with ABS.

    We'll see (hopefully soon!)
