When should i buy the new mk3?

Hello,

I'm new to this domain, so i want to buy a 3d printer. After reading and watching many reviews i'm ready to buy a prusa mk3.

The question is: should i buy it now? or should i wait for black friday or christmas? there will be any price discounts any time soon? does anyone know of the past years?

Thank you very much!

I'd order it now, depends how long you want to wait.

I'd be stunned if any discounts were offered on the MK3 any time soon - they haven't even started shipping it yet !!

If price is the only factor, buy now. Can't see any point to them dropping the price on their top of the line, can't make enough, back-ordered printer. It would just make their back-order queue deeper and lead to pissed off customers with 3 month lead times.

If you are more interested in "are there any issues with it?" you might wait a few weeks. The first production samples should be in reviewers hands before the end of the month, and at this point an order won't ship until February or so anyway. Although the review samples may trigger more press, more interest, and more orders.

I'd order now, and cancel in a month if you don't like what you see in the reviews. (I'm not expecting this to be an issue, I preordered September and won't be cancelling)

Last time they gave a big discount was on MK2 just before MK3 launch. Watch what you wish for you might just get it and regret you got what you wanted. I just missed the MK2 sale and glad I did.
I don't see any discount anytime soon. They have 3 months of backorders as it is right now. I ordered in Sept 25 and hopefully will get it by Christmas.

+1 on ordering now and cancelling if you change your mind.

PS: I ordered September 27th and asked support if it's safe to assume it will be delivered within the first or second week after the start of shipments, and the answer was that yes, that is a reasonable assumption

I work on new product launches and that is a guess at best. Having a demo unit to take to trade shows and having a production ready model is two different things. Consumer products are a bit more reliable on launches than industrial products but until they actually start shipping it is anyone's guess. Also depends on the company. Some companies ship ready or not and deal with the fall out of shipping a buggy product.

Don't they just ... some big name players use customers for debugging ... fortunately I don't think Joe falls into that category, he does seem to care what leaves his doors, of course that could change over time as he becomes more and more disconnected from the process.

So if i'll preorder this week, or the next one, i'll get my mk3 sometime in february? ... I'm wondering about reliability, i know that the mk2 is very good, but the mk3 is a new, kinda untested printer, and may have some glitches? And if they have glitches, i guess they have time to fix them until february ... am i right?

That's one of the pros of having a RepRap style 3D printer. If there are issues with the parts, implementations can be applied immediately to the units.
There might be some Glitches, but note that they have had MK3s in their printer farm running 24/7 for the past few months to find those kinks. Prusa actually mentions in an interview that doing so is a good indication as to its reliability, and tends to show any problems with the design.
If somehow a glitch made its way through the months of stress testing, then yes, they would have some time to fix them by February. By then, you will also have people who have assembled it, so you would know if there is anything to note when assembling or using it.
Also, it seems that that was the main focus of the MK3 (reliability).

It would be spectacular failure for them to discount mk3 this year at all. They would end up with a boatload of returns+re-orders, and CC chargebacks if they didnt pass discounts back to every pre-order. There is zero need for any discount, either you are smart enough to know that its worth every cent and you have the money, in which case you should have pulled the trigger already.. or you do not yet, and you will not yet.
