Rough prints so trying Benchy!

I've had some really rough prints over the last week or so (the outside surface feels rough). I had to tighten my x axis belt but that should have fixed things!

I've decided to print out Benchy to see how that comes out as the SD card models seem to be a good starting point for diagnosis.

It's printing live on YouTube right now, you can watch it here:

Basically, the outsides of the print have become rough. Any thoughts?

I'm making my way through all the SD card models at this rate - Hope you don't mind me posting my feed on here!

Here is the end result of the print.

If you skip through, I give some close-ups on the print itself.
Under the bow, it's quite rough and on the sides of the print you can see differences in the layers.

Any thoughts would be welcomed?

I think, and I'm sure those in the know will correct me if I'm wrong, that a lot of it has to do with the slicing profile. Someone sent me a Benchy they sliced in Simplify3D and it's way better than what I can get using Slic3r. Enough so that I considered purchasing S3D but if you look where I asked in the S3d profiles thread you'll see I was told it's more of the settings than the slicer so my goal now is to get a better handle on all of the settings in the slic3r before I explore other programs... If you like I can dig around and see if I still have the Benchy gcode I had.

What filament type is that?
What temp range is it supposed to have.
What temp are you at?
Do you have your fans on?
If so, what speed?

That looks to me like a thermal droop. (Which it may or may not be, I'm no expert)

Typically caused by.
A) Temps to high for the filament.
B) Temps to high for the filament AND to slow. (Hot and fast can actually yeild good results. Sometimes.
C) Print speed is to slow.
D) Poor cooling. (Fan speeds to slow.)
E) Poor cooling. Overhang orientation related to cooling fan.
F) Poor cooling. Poorly designed cooling duct. (I can't recall who, but someone on here has designed an AWESOME redesign of the cooling system)

That's my 2 cents.
EDIT: 1
I struggle with this issue on my cheap monoprice mini. It has a single fan for both cooling the hot-end, and cooling the parts. Not much air blows on the parts, and it only blows from the "front" of the printer. So any overhang on the back looks TERRIBLE.

EDIT: 2
jltx made THIS AWESOME COOLING SYSTEM I love the design and the concept. I haven't printed it yet, as I don't have my Mk3 yet. (Hurry up and fix that Josef!!!)
I'm gonna try printing it in PLA+, and anneal it, to see if that works. (There's a thread about drooping fan ducts)

Re: Rough prints so trying Benchy!

my benchies have been inconsistent as well.

very first print off the 3dcard was honestly one of the best I'd ever seen (hatchbox). tried a few more days later and its all over the place. I'd like to find a better cooling shroud, or at least one with similar performance and better visibility of the nozzle. Makes it easier to troubleshoot if you can watch.

Re: Rough prints so trying Benchy!

So I made this *very* basic benchmark/stress-test/etc, to make printers cry.

It will test your cooling from multiple angles. (For example, my printer's overhangs on the back look TERRIBLE) I will print this and will post results when I get home tomorrow. (I don't think I'll still be awake when it's done)

EDIT: Needs a small redesign. It needs to be 2x larger in all dimensions. This can easily be done by re-scaling in the slicer though, so I'll leave this here for now, and fix it tomorrow. The "line" under each star point should be STRAIGHT. If it's saggy, or wavy, warply, etc... you have some kind of thermal issue.

I'm going to do another print with updates and new models soon.
