Problem with the filament detector
Hi.
On Wednesday I received my expected MK3 and on Thursday I mounted it and when doing the initial calibration I get a filament detector error.
I check the connections and they are correct, I try again and follow the same error. I dismantle the wiring and check that the cable is correct. I re-assemble everything and keep giving the error. I have disassembled the detector and no defect is seen.
The same Thursday I sent an email to Prusa and they still have not answered me.
For the rest I have calibrated manually and I have skipped the step of the filament detector and everything is perfect.
Excepto for the detector for the rest I am very happy with the quality.
Has anyone had this?
How can I tell if the problem is from the detector or is it software or the motherboard?
How often does it take to give me an answer from Prusa ?.
Thanks and best regards.
Re: Problem with the filament detector
recent firmwares were supposed to address sensor issues, however my mk3 wth 3.1/1 RC5 150 still struggles with transparent green petg and black tpu it's ok with purple PLA.
hopefully we will see another releas soon

Re: Problem with the filament detector
My filament sensor triggered with black PETG the day before yesterday after happily printing for an hour. Then it triggered every layer or two. It was running FW 3.1.1 rc5 b150. I wasn't sure if the sensor had gone bad (?) so I tried two other materials (clear/natural PETG and white PLA) and had no issue. I switched back to black PETG and it triggered again.
I updated to the 3.1.1 release firmware last night and the sensor tripped on black PETG. Sometimes it would run for a minute or two, sometimes it would trip after a few seconds.
Otherwise, I'm running OctoPrint on a Pi Zero W attached to the Einsy which is working flawlessly.
FWIW my MK3 runs in a dark room.
My black PETG is Inland branded, which I've read is made by eSUN but I can't say for sure.
timothy.g mentioned this in "OctoPrint issues and tips" as well.
Re: Problem with the filament detector

Re: Problem with the filament detector
What error do you get? I had some issues when I had my huge magnifying glass with a ring of powerful LEDs close to the sensor. The LEDs can cause errors, they went away when I moved the strong light away from the sensor.
Re: Problem with the filament detector
Same issue here (and posted in another similar thread). Filament sensor error during self-test, but I've checked the wiring, inspected the sensor, and done a factory reset to no avail. Even got out my trusty multimeter and confirmed that the cable is sound.
Re: Problem with the filament detector
Prusa has replaced my sensor and my EINSY board, with no luck. I read somewhere there is a known issue with the filament sensors shorting out (not all of them, but a bunch) as they are being built. My guess is the reflow oven for the SMT devices caused the solder to flow too far, shorting things out.
They redesigned it to prevent this issue and now have the new batch of sensors in.
Prusa just sent me one of these new sensors, though I do not have it yet. I will post if it fixes the wiring error or not.
