Pausing Print
Is their a good way to pause a print overnight on the Mk3?
I tried the pause print option but it keeps the bed heated (not as important as I'm printing PLA).
I did get the printer to 'pause' by killing the power and then the next day turned it on and it resumed, but I'd rather have some way to pause and let
the print head get away from the print so when I restart it the print head isn't directly on the print.
Re: Pausing Print
I wish their was. I refuse to leave my printers running overnight which is seriously limiting.
Re: Pausing Print
It should be not too hard to modify the pause command that it also cools down the printbed. If you are somewhat familiar with programming you might be able to do that yourself.
Just an thought - maybe I am wrong.
Usually you want to keep the bed heated so that parts keep sticking, do not start warping and layer adhesion is consistent.
What happens when you pause, and then do the power panic?:-)
Re: Pausing Print
So I tried that.
I paused the print and it sent the head to a resting spot.
Then I turned off the machine from the switch (maybe I should have pulled the plug).
When I turned it back on the machine was no longer in a pause state it was just waiting for me to pick a file.
Re: Pausing Print
Similar issue here. I am not in a position to leave the printer on overnight.
I wish the pause print option could leave some kind of log or progress file on the SD when pause is selected. Hoping the printer could use this to resume the print after power has been returned.
Don’t know if this is an extreme requirement but it certainly would solve a problem.
If I can’t resolve it then I may have an assembled very nice mk3 for sale.
🙁
Re: Pausing Print
Quick question, since i dont have mine yet. Is the Mk3 loud enough you cant sleep with it on? why turn it off at night?
I intend to keep mine running 24.7 once i get it dialed in and the focus on making it quieter was a selling point for me, how successful were they in making it quiet?
Re: Pausing Print
Just lower the bed temperature by hand before you hitting the pause button. This way you should have everything paused.
But be aware that all stepper motors are still active. The pause function was not designed to keep this state for a long time unattended. What you actually request is a "sleep" function which is not implemented yet.

The printer is very quite normally. Unless you are a really light sleeper, you should be fine.
As to those not willing to print overnight. I would urge you to reconsider. With the MK3 there are multiple safety features to stop a fire. One, fan sensors to know when the hot end fan is not working optimally, Two, thermal runaway protection, if the fan fails and the fan RPM warning fails, this will stop the print when the hot end gets too hot. Three, the fuses for electrical issues...
The only thing that worries me about leaving the printer is the threat of a blob forming and growing when you are not there to stop it. With crash detection, there is a little protection from this, but probably not much. Blobs are a pain, but can be recovered from. And, reading from the experiences of others, including mine, you can take steps to likely prevent a blob.
So, keep calm, and print 24/7! I say anyway...
Re: Pausing Print
I love the workaround for the bed temp.
Regarding the safety features....
I am totally happy with how safe the options on this device are. Indeed it is exactly why I bought it. Unfortunately the wife is not so convinced.
But I can sell the paused print with a cold bed.
Re: Pausing Print
Re printing 24/7 - what about the printers where the filament sensor board has malfunctioned and got hot enough to melt the extruder housing? What about the printers where the PSU has gone pop, some with smoke and even flame? I know these are a small proportion of total sales but they have happened.
No matter how much I love my Prusa printers I'm not yet willing to risk my and my families life on them. Perhaps if it were outside in a shed or garage yes, indoors running while everyone sleeps - no.

Yes the PSU does concern me. This is why i already have a 500W unit ready to go, i likely wont run mine 24/7 untill i swap in the bigger unit. Ill assemble and run the printer 100% stock at first to test and dial it in, but will likely do a few "safety" upgrades before running it 24/7. Ill likely also disable the filament sensor, to many issues reported with transparent or glossy filaments causing false readings and over half of the filaments i have ordered for this printer are transparent or very glossy.
Re: Pausing Print
A sleep feature could turn down the current drive to the stepper motors enough just to keep them positioned and not skip. This would be better for long time sleep of 12 hours or more.
Turn off the hot end. Cool down the hot end and then turn off the fan.
Turn off or turn down the heat bed temp.
Would be a handy feature if it works. I don't print overnight either.

Re: Pausing Print
I specifically exchanged my MK2S for the MK3 because of the lower noise. Many prints take tens of hours so if you can't print overnight, you are limited to rather small or simple parts. I reduce the printing and travel speeds < 80-100 mm/s, have the printer in stealth mode, put it on a concrete paver (on bike tube for isolation) and it is extremely silent, so I can have it in my appartment printing overnight. I am more worried printing over the day when I'm not in.
If you are afraid of your house burning down at night, maybe look at interconnected fire detectors. These would sound an alarm in your sleeping room if you have a fire wherever your printer is.
