Re: MK3 Multi Material

I'm interested in this too, I have a MK2 MMU (with no MK2 printer anymore) and a MK3 pre-ordered within an hour of the announcement. My concern is that with the already long backlog on MK2 MMUs, that getting a "MK2 to MK3 MMU upgrade kit" or a complete MK3 MMU could take a really long time...

At a minimum we would need:

  • MK3 firmware with MMU support

  • Use the existing MK2 MMU carriage w/ original 30mm 12V hotend fan plus a voltage divider, or,

  • Print a new MK3 MMU carriage which uses the MK3 40mm 24V hotend fan
  • This would give MM capability but without filament sensors.

To get 4x filament sensors to work, I expect we'll need an upgraded super switch board with additional 4 in, 1 out connectors for the sensors.

Lets hope that the Y-splitter doesn't need a change and we just need a new MK3 Extruder-adaptor-MM and something for the 4 Extruders to get the filament sensors attached.
It looks like that the MK3 fans are 5V, but we will see in November.

To get 4x filament sensors to work, I expect we'll need an upgraded super switch board with additional 4 in, 1 out connectors for the sensors.

The Prusa laser-mouse-filament-senor communicates via I2C and there is no need to change the super switch. To use more than one I2C filament sensor you just need different addresses (one per module) and these can be daisy chained and still use only 4 pins (5V GND SCL SDA) on the Einsy board. The rest is firmware.

I'm also would like to know, looking forward to owning the MK3 with MMU but would be nice to know id the mk2 mmu is used with an upgrade or if it's entirely a new mmu, this is whats stopping me from placing the order. The longer it takes to find out, the longer it's going to take

    Hi guys,
Multi Material for MK3 is expected to start shipping from January 2018 and will be available to order later. MK3 version of Multi Material will be upgraded with filament sensors and an addon to the superswitch board. Those will be available as an upgrade pack for MK2 Multi Material.

PLEASE NOTE MK3 IS NOT DIRECTLY COMPATIBLE WITH MMU FOR MK2/S !!! YOU NEED TO PRINT NEW PARTS

Just to clarify: you placed an order for the Mk3, the mk3 multi-material, or mk2 multi-material planning for an upgrade later?

Just asking because after your comment I started looking for where I could order the mk3 mm and could not find it on the prusa shop.

I placed the order for the mk3 , I held off on ordering the mmu. just for the fact it will not work with the mk3 without the upgrade in January 2018. as per jakub.d message.

I understand the current MMU is not compatible with the MK3 but will it be okay for use with the MK2S if we get the 2.5 upgrade later?

Well MK3 has different Extruder design, therefore MMU for MK2 isn't directly compatible. As soon as our devs finish the redesign, the MK2 MMU should be usable on MK3, but you have to print some parts. Also we will include filaments sensors for each motor, therefore the Extruder body on the top of the frame will be changed as well. The same is for MK2.5, in case you want to have the sensors.

    Hi jakub.d,

I have a question regarding the MMU and the MK2.5 upgrade. I already have a MK2S with the MMU upgrade an I just ordered the MK2.5 upgrade. Of course there is only going to be one filament sensor in the upgrade.

Is it somehow possible to get 4 sensors to use with the MMU?

    Re: MK3 Multi Material

MK3 MMU pre-order is in the shop now. Looks like the price went up by $50 from MK2 MMU.

    https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/183-original-prusa-i3-mk3-multi-material-upgrade-kit.html

The "MK2 MMU to MK3 MMU upgrade" is not listed yet, but it says "If you already have Multi Material for MK2/S, you will be able to buy missing components (4x filament sensors) separately for approx. 50 USD and use the upgrade for MK3. "

I hope the upgrade shows up soon. 🙂

    Re: MK3 Multi Material

    G'day all!
I recently ordered a MK2S and received it 1 week before the MK3 was announced and the price for the MK2S dropped. PERFECT TIMING!!!! 😛 😛 😛

Before I purchased it, I was already looking at getting the MMU for it, but with the MK3 out, any ideas as to which order I would be better off upgrading?
Should I upgrade to the MK2.5, then to the MK3 MMU, or upgrade to the MK2 MMU first?

Will it now be possible to allow each extruder to print sequentially to allow for the use of "short" rolls to get used up then move on to a fuller roll of filament? RE: Too much yet too little?

Seriously? I don’t see it on the website, just the mk2 mm. Where did you find it?

[yes, I’m an idiot who didn’t read the posts above! Ordered! Didn’t see it when I glanced through the site, though...]

    Re: MK3 Multi Material

MK2 MMU to MK2.5 / MK3 MMU just showed up in the shop:
    https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/185-multi-material-upgrade-kit-from-mk2-to-mk25mk3.html

Shipping to the USA costs half as much as the upgrade. 😮

Still, I think it's good news that the same MMU upgrade works for both MK2.5 and MK3.
