Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
On Facebook group you get the impression that the PSU mostly rattles when driven by 110 V - often in the USA.
Would we come to the same conclusion on this board?
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
60hz v 50hz maybe.

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Mine rattles. Just finished build, doing XYZ calibration, and by far the loudest noise is a buzz/rattle that appears to come from the PSU. No poking with non-conductive sticks yet.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Mine also rattles, very loud and annoying, anyone got a solution? mine is a UK 240v version.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
I opened my psu today and norrowed the rattling down to the something between the PCB and the Case.
There is a plastic sheet under the PCB, probably for insulation. I did not remove the PCB to get to the sheet.
my PSU is for Europe so 230V, 50Hz
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
What are the specs of the PSU? max Amperage and dimensions especially?
For a DIY LED project that I did I bought (and am very happy with) a Meanwell PSU from the LRS series - maybe that could be an upgrade option for some people.
What I still do not understand (since my MK3 will arrive next week): where is the power panic board sitting? is it under the black PSU shield on the bottom of the PSU? Or is it IN the PSU?
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Mine also rattles at certain frequencies but this is on the MK2S.
Holding onto it doesn't do much but I will check if a zip tie helps the next time i'm printing. 🙂
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
My power supply was also vibrating and it was the tin insulation plastic between the psu main board and the aluminium casing that was making that annoying nose .
To stop it from vibrating I simply pushed delicately to not damage the plastic insulation a few small wooden skewers(non conductive) between the aluminium casing and the plastic insulator true the venting holes to create some space and then injected some silicone in different places true other venting holes 3 on each side, small dabs are enough, the cooling of the psu is very important!!! so don't put to much
Take the skewers out will the silicon is still fresh the plastic insulator will press against the silicone and glue itself
and once everything is cured no more vibration.
I don't know if doing so will void my warrantie but it solve my problem be careful and do it at your own risk.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
I finnally opened up the PSU and carefully removed the PCB (my printer was off for a week).
Under the PCB is a black plastic sheet that is bowed over 2 threaded holes in the middle of the case.
Certain vibrations cause it to shake and rattle gainst the case or PCB.
I fixed the plastic sheet with double sided tape to the Case and now the printer is silent.
two short viedos of the inside:
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Had the same rattling noise from the PSU on my MK2S. The insulation plastic sheet in the PSU vibrates at certain frequencies as maximilian.r describes.
My solution was to insert some small pieces of sponge (plastic sponge) between the inside case and the plastic sheet to fix it - no need to disassemble the PSU, just inserted through the backside ventilation slots.
Done the same with the MK3 PSU. Easy to do, but only dampens the noise from plastic sheet.
Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
I too have a rattle, but its coming from the right trapezoidal screw. If i only slightly press it with my thumb on the top part where it goes into the upper support the rattle stops.
Maybe worth testing before sticking stuff into the PSU.
My PSU was also ratteling and by far the loudest sound of the printer. And though it wasn't really anoying to me i figured out the same. The tip of the right lead screw was touching the printed top part and that vibrations were transmitted to the PSU. So i readjusted the black nylon nut of the lead screw and now it's all quiet like nice summer breeze. I am really happy now. 🙂
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Hi!
I have the same issue. It was the PSU. I fixed it. The soud is now better but it still is there. The vibrations are coming from the left and right parts where th black nuts are but pressing them down doesn't change anything. How have you readjusted the nuts and what shoud I check? Could you help please?
There is a video (ignore the knob sound at the beginning and in the middle of the video) : https://streamable.com/u2pto
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
I appear to have one of these rattling PSU units, since this thread hasn't been updated in a while was this just an issue in the first couple of batches of printers sent out? If so, should Prusa support just be contacted to send a replacement or is there a recommended way to get rid of the rattling?
The PSU also has the "clicking" when the bed temp is just being maintained.
It would be nice to hear from Prusa about things like this, even if it's just a quick comment about the options available.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
There is black insulating plastic inside of PSU, for me that was cause for rattling.
I "fixed" it by pushing ziptie from back of PSU, between board and that black plastic.
Beware of live ac voltage there.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
For those considering using silicone to fix this issue, please do not do it! Silicone is conductive and NOT recommended at all for use inside electronics. Use hot glue and ensure its electrical save at a minimum before you do it!

Why do they sell silicone coated wire?
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
Holy crap, you guys weren't kidding about that rattling. I get a slight amount of rattling, but nothing that bad!

Hardened silicone is a great insulator, and shouldn’t be confused with silicon. It is not conductive. Silicone can contain conductive additives however, which you have to be careful about. Silicone is not great with electronics though because the self curing type, often RTV, is corrosive which can damage electronics. Hot glue is a simple cheap alternative.
Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU
If this is true, why do they make brush on Silicon Conformal Coating for electronic circuit boards??? I have no idea what kind of Silicon you are talking about...

Electronics specific silicone are neutral cure. They release alcohol usually. The silicone you buy in most other places is Acetoxy, which is not safe for electronics and is corrosive.
