Loud rattling sound from PSU

The loudest source of noise (by far) on my MK3 is a rattle coming from the PSU during some print moves. I'm not referring to the clicking sound that occurs as the bed or hotend PWM heaters kick in. This rattle sounds like a loose screw or metal-on-metal vibration coming from inside the PSU. I shook it, but nothing came loose or fell out. I can't tell if it's coming from the PSU itself or the wiring components within the 3d printed cover.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue before I dismount the PSU and try to pinpoint the source of the noise.

Thanks.

I have the same issue...during mesh leveling the isolation sheet in the psu rattles. If i tap the psu it also rattles slightly

I just did.

The guy in chat said it is not normal and he will check back with his colleagues.

here a video of the noise:

Here's mine. I think mine is much worse than yours.

Edit: Sorry on second thought it is about the same as yours, I'm not trying to boast whose is worse. 😆

I just finished my build.. and also have the same issue of a rattle inside the PSU. Oddly enough mine is loudest when tapping the Einsy board lol.. something about the vibration.

I hear it during moves while printing.. I'll need to contact support. I think its about half way down the supply.. sounds like a loose piece of metal rattling at just the right vibration. I'll have to contact support since I don't want to void warranty by opening it.

On the videos it sounds like case vibration rather than something inside rattling about. Try checking for loose screws on metal case cover or even squeeze the case together ( by hand ) to see if that is the issue

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

nope, defintly inside the PSU. lose screws wa the first thing i checked. In the beginning i suspected the bearings or the Nut fromn the Z-axis

I removed it from the printer and gave it a tap and it rattles. and with the PSU not installed the rattle is gone.

I also checked the screws from the PSU, they were all tight.

There is a plastic sheet inside between the PCB and the case which i think is ratteling.

Has no-one had the courage to open up the PSU and get to the source of the rattle.

I can't imagine that Prusa would hold this against you if you did.. If mine does this, I am just going to open the PSU and secure what is rattling, irrespective of warrantee.. At the end of the day, I cant' see they would ever know (or care) that I had opened it IF I needed something from them.

Edit: Now that i have writen then, I should say that I am not condoning anyone to do this.. Playing around inside PSUs can be dangerous as the caps still hold a charge even with mains removed.. So if you are inspired to do this, please make sure you know what you are doing and discharge the PSU before poking around inside.

I have a case opened with Prusa on this.. I am avoiding opening it to figure out what’s wrong because it has “do not break” seals. Once/if they tell me to take a look; I will. It seems to work fine, but with fast x/y movements it really starts getting noisy.

They wanted a video of my issue which I sent them.. we shall see.

I would but to open the psu i would have redo the wiring....and i i have to until the caps are discharged and cannot play with my new toy 🙄

Hey Ron, on the topic of sounds, watching section 6 now, on the noisy Einsy ver B board is it possible the suspended cantilevered daughter board is the culprit causing the distinct vibration?

I can't think of anything else to attribute it to?

Have you pinpointed and resolved that noise?

Seems like anything oscillating like that would eventually fail from work hardening the pins, or even popping a pad after long enough?

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Take another look, I suggest...
Ron pinpointed the noise and identified it as coming from the power supply. It seemed as if a tap on the control box was exciting the frame and the PSU.
From what I could discern from the video there wasn't enough mass in the control box assembly itself to create or sustain that level of vibration.

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

the rattle is indeed from the PSU. It was odd; but tapping the control box just seemed to really trigger it. I know whatever it is; is about half way up.. and is inside 🙂

Still waiting on a response from support.

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Just want to say, my PSU rattles as well. The machine would be so quiet if it wasn't for the rattle!

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Looks like its vibrations between the frame and the PSU casing to me, but cannot say for certain based on a few youtube clips. Will check my own printer when it arrives(hopefully in a few days).

Reminds me of how 90% of the noise from modern refrigerators usually come from loose waterlines on the back vibrating due to the compressor working..

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Hi All,

just received the BLACK box... 🙂

not building right away, but checked to separate PSU for the rattle.
and yes it is in the PSU itself

looking at the inside trough the mesh.
is see a capacitor (i believe) with carbon filters or something like that and after shaking and trying to hold the pieces with a long sticky...

it looks the source of the rattle.

@josefprusa
hope this helps

regards and happy printing

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Looks like we could 3d print some anti-rattling stick that locks in the cooling slots and holds down the rattling parts...

What about hot glue?
Normaly it is noncunductive and perfectly suitable to lock parts in postition.
But just as long as the temperatury does not raise to much.

Re: Loud rattling sound from PSU

Those beads are ferrite and I think are used for RFI suppression. They are normally placed over the radial leg of the component and then the component leads are bent to be soldered into the PCB. A dab of real 100% clear silicone adhesive can be placed on both sides to connect the ferrite bead to the component body (and to the PCB if needed) to help stop the vibration.

UNPLUG THE POWER CORD FROM THE POWER SUPPLY BEFORE STICKING ANYTHING INSIDE THE PSU!!!

I would use 100% clear silicone on a toothpick or other non-conductive stick so you don't short out the component leads to the case cover if you happen to touch the leads.
