LCD Display flickering when moving extruder assembly
Whilst trying to prepare for printer calibration I moved the extruder assembly piece left to right and back to see if the nozzle would hit the bed anywhere.
During the movement the display starts flickering/lighting up.
It did not matter whether the printer was plugged (and switched off) or unplugged.
Is this normal?
(trying to not make errors/damage my first built 3D printer ever and being perhaps over cautious)
Re: LCD Display flickering when moving extruder assembly
Yes, the steppers act as micro generators and back feed through the protection circuits... dont worry about it

Yes, this is normal, but yes, worry about it! Dont do this and when you need move your axis by hand, go slowly.... otherwise you can damage your electronics with high voltage!
It is mentioned in printer manual or handbook I think.
Re: LCD Display flickering when moving extruder assembly
Thanks for your replies joan.t and Kissman.
I could find nothing on it the manual (and still can't) so glad I asked and I will move it slower from here onwards. 🙂
Re: LCD Display flickering when moving extruder assembly
Technically you shouldn't do it, just like you shouldn't assemble electronics without a grounding strap. 🙄
I've never had an issue in the past four years with 5+ different printers, just like I've never actually killed a piece of hardware due to ESD.
Be aware of it, but don't stress about it.

I think you may have misunderstood the question... Has nothing to do with electrostatic discharge. It is merely power being generated by the stepper motor when manually manipulated.
Have the MK2, and had a cheap Chinese Makerbot clone. They all did it...

I read kelchm's post the same way at first but he does not actually say it was an esd incident...

I guess it was me that misunderstood... 😳
